If this is an external hard drive, what has happened is the USB interface has actually malfunctioned. I had a similar problem with a Seagate one.

If your computer is SATA capable with your present hard drive, what you have to do is actually remove the casing of the external hard drive until you come to the physical drive. It is a SATA hard drive. I removed the casing off mine because the USB interface all of a sudden died.

When I did this and plugged it into my computer, it recognized it immediately and had all of my files there. As long as none of the folders were encrypted, this goes on without a hitch.

Just take your time in removing the casing and you will be fine.

This usually happenswhen you try to connect to any Vista machine, the problem is that the My Book is formatted to FAT32 by default which is not recognised by Vista, it has to be NTFS which is the format originally in NT, you need to connect it to an XP or earlier machine copy all the data off, reformat to NTFS and copy your data back. Your My Book will then be compatible with both XP and Vista and the new Windows 7

Windows XP does not have built in SATA drivers. You will need to download the XP drivers from Western Digital's website and install before the computer will allow you to format and use your new drive. Hope this helps.

The round lights on the front of the drive are actually power off/on button. Have you tried pressing it? I know it's simple, but you never know. :)
