That pointer you speak is connected to the column sleeve at bottom with a small wire on a push on clip. Either the clip has come off the column sleeve or the wire connecting them is broken. You just have to figure out how to get to it.

SOURCE: I have a 1993 Olds 88 that is stuck in neutral.

do not touch the column. the cable is attached to the bottom of the shift lever and on the trans. find out which end is bad and go from there. most likely you will need to replace the cable but ck both ends first.

SOURCE: I have a 2001 for ranger. The shift indicator

You will need to go to a Ford dealership and first get the part. The remove the radio's center trim panel. two screws are hidden at the bottom. Removet that panel the remove all screws that hold in the cluster trim. After the trim is removed, remove thecluster screws. You will see the cable which leads into the shift bowl. That is what is removed and replaced

SOURCE: 1997 grand marquis has shifter

The shifting linkage is worn. The linkage from the column to the transmission is loose and will need replaced to get the indicator to read the proper gear that you are in. Is the shifting loose? Or does it still seem like it is tight? It could be also be the gear positioning sensor has been moved out of position. If the shifter seems loose then it would be the linkage. If it still seems tight then it should be the sensor.

SOURCE: Column shifter does not make the gears change, indicator moves from P to D and nothing happens

Sounds like your cable has broken or come off on the side of the transmission this is your problem it snaps off and on under the vehicle. and if the linkage is intact and moves it is the electronic module on the side of the transmission behind the shift cable.Remember to rate my solution and give testimonial this is how i earn my achievements here on FixYa Thanks in advance if you need further help just ask

How do you fix a broken column shifter in a 2002 Buick Century

If the column shifter in your 2002 Buick Century is broken, you will need to have it repaired or replaced. This is not a repair that can be easily done at home, as it involves disassembling the dashboard and steering column to access the shifter mechanism. In order to fix a broken column shifter, it is recommended to have the vehicle assessed by a qualified mechanic. They will be able to diagnose the specific cause of the issue and recommend the appropriate repair or replacement. Depending on the extent of the damage, the repair may involve replacing the shifter mechanism, the shifter cable, or other related components.

Can't change the gears stuck in drive will not go in reverse or park or Nur.

Really need more information to give you a better answer. Is the vehicle a column shift or a floor shift. Front wheel drive or rear wheel drive. You may have a broken shifter collar or a shifter cable that may be damaged. You may have internal transmission problems. To determine disconnect the connection at the transmission and then see if the shifter will move. If it does , then the problem is internal. If it still does not move then disconnect the cable from the shifter. If it moves freely then the problem is the cable, if not then it is the shifter collar or column depending on which vehicle it is.

Shift indicator not working correctly

This is a common concern on explorer, shift indicator cable breaks.if you're the diy type this is a pretty easy repair. Remove steering column cover top and bottom, and instrument bezel.you'll see shifter indicator coming out of bottom of instrument cluster and cable wrapped around steering column, attached to the shifter.you'll have to remove 4 screws for cluster,7mm, tilt the bottom of the cluster and look where indicator is attached, usually 2 7 mm bolts or clips, remove and replace indicator...if the steering column was lowered without taking off indicator cable it would break cable, or could be band that wraps around column that's loose or broken..either way cheap fix..

No parking on 98 ford explorer

That has nothing to do with the neutral safety switch (totally separate problem). You either have a broken adjuster or the cable adjuster is simply out of adjustment for your gearshift indicator. This cable and adjuster for this is located on the steering column just below the shifter. If the adjuster is broken (pretty common) the gearshift indicator asembly must be replaced to get it to work correctly.

Auto will not disengage from park.

ok, other than the obvious question of are you applying the brake before shifting my next would be does the gear shift move at all? If it does is there any resistance or not? If there is no resistance it is possible that the shift cable is broken. Also is the shifter on the column or in the center console? If it is in the center the plunger that allows the shifter to move may be stuck or broken. There is a clip that holds the handle on, remove the clip and ensure the button on the shifter handle is moving and pressing down on the nylon piece that "unlocks" the shifter. Lastly the problem could be with the "shift interlock" which is a cable that ties the shifter to the brake pedal. If the interlock is damaged it will prevent the vehicle from shifting from park. I hope i have helped in some way.

Shift cable has sliped r is park n is reverse ect

What you have here is a broken shift indicator adjuster accessed by removing the steering column shrouds or the shift linkage plate at the bottom of the steering column above the pedals has come loose from the shifter tube which goes along the top of the steering column.

Odometer n gear shift indicator don't work and i don't know the cause or how to begin to fixing it

if its the manual transmission and the shift light you're talking about, its probably the bulb, is its the auto gear indicator, there is a cable going from the needle on the indicator to the plastic on the steering column (the part that moves with the shifter) make sure it is attached, the odometer is driven with gears, make sure the gears are not broken or derailed.

How to take off steering wheel.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
If necessary for access or service remove the steering wheel. Except for on 1967-69 simulated wood wheels, be sure to use a steering wheel puller.
  1. Remove the nut/bolt from the upper intermediate shaft coupling, then separate the coupling from the lower end of the steering column.
  2. If equipped with a column mounted shifter, disconnect the transmission control linkage from the column shift tube levers.
  3. If equipped with a floor shifter, disconnect the backdrive linkage.
  4. Disengage all of the electrical connectors from the steering column assembly.
  5. Remove the floor pan cover-to-floor screws, the floor seal, and the cover.
  6. Remove the steering column bracket-to-instrument panel nuts and carefully lower the column. If equipped with an automatic transmission, disconnect the shift position indictor pointer.
Once the steering column has been removed from the vehicle, be careful not to drop it (especially on it's end), lean on it or damage it in any way; the column is very susceptible to damage.
  1. Remove the column from the vehicle.
To install:
  1. Position the steering column in the vehicle. If equipped with an automatic transmission, connect the shift position indicator pointer.
  2. Raise the column into position, then install the column bracket-to-instrument panel nuts and tighten to 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm).
  3. Install the floor pan seal and cover, then secure using the retaining screws.
  4. Engage all of the electrical connectors to the steering column assembly.
  5. If equipped with a floor shifter, connect the backdrive linkage.
  6. If equipped with a column mounted shifter, connect the transmission control linkage to the column shift tube levers.
  7. Connect the intermediate shaft coupling to the lower end of the steering column, then secure using the nut/bolt.
  8. If removed for access or service, align the matchmarks and install the steering wheel.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.

Good luck..
