Hi,
Generally the problem is caused due bad LCD inverter cable. Kindly run the LCD diagnostics
How to Run diagnostics
1. Shut down the computer
2. Disconnect the AC adapter and Battery
3. Press the power button for 10 sec.
4. reconnect both AC adapter and battery
5. Press FN key+ power button
6. Follow the screen prompts.

If the LCD problem is shown in diagnostics your screen would have to be replaced.

My Inspiron 6000 screen is blank. I can get an image on a monitor through the serial port, but when on its own, the notebook screen is black. I have noticed that there is a brief flash when booting up, but...

Hi ,

1. You can check the display on external monitor>If the display is blank on external monitor also, its pretty clear that there is an issue with system board

2. If the Exernal monitor comes up fine, it will be an issue with the display of the laptop, you can cross check the issue by booting the computer to BIOS, IF you get same response on BIOS as well. Its an issue with the Display itself you can replace the display panel.

Hopefully, its covered under warranty ;)

The bottom third of my screen is black w/ fine lines of colors that coincide with the current screen

Dell Inspiron 6000 are notorious for developing screen faults. Dell won't do anything about it unless under warranty. Have the screen replaced by a repair shop unless you feel confident enough to do it yourself.

Screen is blank

You have a VGA port on that machine that will allow you to connect a standard monitor. After you have connected the monitor you will need to tell the machine to switch the display. This is done by holding down the Fn key (3 keys to the left of the space bar) and pressing the key that looks like a monitor (typicaly the f4 key). Hit that combination a couple of times till your external monitor displays. This is also worth a try in case you have, accidentaly, set your notebook to only show on an external display. If that works, and everything else seems alright it means that you need either a power inverter or a CCFL lamp. Determining which will require patience and a power meter.

Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop LCD Problem

This is most likely going to be a loose connection. You will need to take the the plastic bezel that surrounds the screen off, the screws are hidden under the small rubber bumpers. Then take the screen loose, you will see he four screws holding the screen at the sides. Tilt the screen forward and you will see the connection on the back. Make sure this connection is seated properly, you may need to apply some new tape on it if it has any. Then check any other connections while you're there. If the problem persists, then the cable may need replacing.

From your description it sounds like you've got an image set as your desktop background and it set to "tile" mode. If this is the case you can change it as follows: -Click on Start, settings, control panel -Double left click on Display. -Click on the Desktop tab -If you want to remove the background image just highlight None from the list of backgrounds. If you just want to display one, small image click on pull down arrow to the left of the Position field (bottom right hand section) and select Center. Use Stretch to make the picture fill the entire field. If this solves your issue please don't forget to rate the posting, otherwise give us some additional details as to the exact nature of your issue.
