    Hi there,
this is my first bike....i don't know anything about them. I wasn't having any problems until I left my key on one day for 4 hours and killed the battery. It boosted from truck, I drove home, charged the battery, went for a long drive. Next day, bike was dead again. We tried boosting it from my car, and as soon as we removed the cable, the bike died. A guy looked at it for me and thinks it COULD be the starter but he can't get at it to check it. He says the coolant or something is in the way,and i don't have a service manual. I am crushed right now because I dreamed of owning my own bike by the time I turned 40, as a single mom, I struggled to save the money to get it (just under the "40" deadline, the huge bike fest is in 5 days and my bike is dead!I can't afford to pay someone $80/hr to try to find the problem. I appreciate your input. Thanks ..aka Cinderella

Thanks, you are right on the money. We finally had the idea to take a battery out of my friends bike and try it. My bike worked fine. I took the battery back to the dealer got a full refund which I applied toward an upgraded battery. Great site. Thanks!!!

Hey, it looks like the battery is the problem after all. My friend put his battery in my bike ane it started right away! One guy on this site said that because we weren't load testing the battery, it might still show a good charge and that must have been what was happening. This is a wonderful site and I want to thank you for taking the time to help me. I belong to 2 bike groups and will definitely be spreading the word about this site and the link you gave me. Great resources!!

Because it's likely an electrical problem there are a lot of things to check, the easiest thing is to go to the following link to troubleshoot and narrow the search...http://www.dansmc.com/troubleshooting2.h... There you will find other pages worth checking!? let me know how u get on.

At first glance sounds like the battery is bad. The voltage you read across a battery with no load is not a good way to test. Batteries should always be load tested. Also if you still have the original battery from a 2003 bike you definitely need to replace it.

I have a 2000 suzuki intruder 1500 lc, battery just went dead and turns over very slow and then dies, I just bought a new battery today and the went dead after riding for a few minutes, once again it turns...

Sounds like you have a bad stator or rectifier. If you like to work on your own bike get a repair manual it will give you several test you can do. Charge the battery to full charge, take a volt meter and put in on the battery leads pos to plus and neg to ground. start the bike and watch the meter it should be putting out over 13 volts if it is not have your rectifier and stator checked by a pro. also check the compression valve cable it may be out of adjustment . I had one of those bike for 13 years a great bike

I have a 2003 Suzuki VL800 turned the key on everything powered on hit the ignition switch to start it heard a click from under the seat then the bike went dead. Checked the battery and all the fuses...

Sounds like a possible stuck relay, a bad connector or low battery amperage. Try this to help troubleshoot. Put a volt meter on your battery and check voltage with key off, should be 12.2v at least, turn the key on and check,---then hit the starter switch---you should see a drop in voltage as the battery power goes to the starter---if no voltage drop then power is not going across your start switch. Of course, make sure battery is at full charge, has no dead cells, terminals are clean and tight, and especially the ground. Many times i have found the ground cable going to the frame in bad shape, (you can't see the corrision, u have to remove the cable) this will cause all kinds of problems... no start being one of them. I hope this helps, let me know what you find.

HAVE A 1997 SUZUKI GSXR 600 I CRANK THE BIKE UP TAKE THE NEG CABLE OFF BIKE GOES DEAD IS THE BATTERY CHARGING

The reason the bike shuts down when you remove the negative cable is because you are removing half the circuit.Go and get yourself a volt meter that will do volts DC.Start the bike up and and with the leads on the appropriate terminals have a friend bring the bike off idle and read the voltage. You should get somewhere between 13 to 14.4 volts.Anything less than this means you are not charging up the battery.Good Luck

Volusia wont start after lay up

How long of a lay up? Sounds like a dead battery. Put a voltmeter between the positive and negative battery terminals and try to start the bike. If the voltage drops to under 10v when you are trying to start, your battery is faulty.
