What to do with my subaru legacy's transmission fluid leak

You don't say if its manual or Auto? I'll pretend its auto and ask if the oil is coming from the join between the trans housing and the engine. If it is then the torque converter shaft seal is failing. This is a job for a knowledgeable person and a trans removal. If its at a drive shaft point, again its a job for a mech. If you give us a bit more in detail maybe we can help. Its an old car and if its done 100k plus miles then its about time for seal failures.

Went on trip, drove a little over 500 miles to destination. When went from one freeway to another car seemed to go into a limp mode after slowing to bout 20- 25 mph. I reset by putting it in park turning...

PO456 is most times a gas cap or gasket,
to get an incorrect gear ratio the transmission has probably started to slip.

Change the fluid and filter first off in the transmission and use only atf+4 fluid and possibly the govenor pressure sensor, and change gas cap.

Seems to be slipping in the transmission

if it is slipping then you will need to have the transmission overhauled, once they start to slip it is the end, the forward clutchs are worn out or u have a hydraulic pressure leak inside the transmission, this burns out the clutch quickly, this kind of failure is common around 100-125,000 miles, sooner if the trans has not been serviced every 60,000 miles, this would be a fluid and filter change

I have 60K miles. When is recommended transmission fluid change?

It should be done between 30,000 to 60,000 miles. 30,000 miles if you do lots of stop and go traffic like in rush hour and up to 60,000 miles if your out on the highway most of the time. (less gear change) As long as you service your transmission on a regular schedule, it should last you the life of the car. $100.00 service every 3 years is a good investment since a transmission replacement is around $2,300. Hope this helps and good luck.
