Question about Bernina Virtuosa 160

Bernina 1080 stitch length and needle jumping problem

When you turn on my machine, the needle makes a funny clicking noise, and starts jumping slightly side to side. Eventually does stop, but sometimes takes a while. Also, it sometimes sew slightly zig-zag when straight stitching, and the stitch length is hard to make longer, it always starts off really small (1 or 2 ), and can get it to lengthen only by winding the stitch length dial to the longest setting (5), then bringing it back down in small increments. Sometimes when sewing the preset medium stitch length zigzag, it will jump to large stitch length zig zag, mid-sew. Do I have a costly computer board replacement on my hands, and/or stepper motor???? I have been told by my local bernina agent, that there isn't really a way to test it, they would just start replacing the boards (it has 4), until the problem comes right - a bit hit and miss, and no guarantee the problem would be fixed, with the possibility of a large bill for trying. I love my machine, but not sure whether to take the risk, or walk away from it and buy a new one - equivalent around $2500. YOUR HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED! :-)

Yes, have tried turning off then on, and doesn't seem to help, and adjusting the stitch controls sometimes did help, but it's getting worse, and this trick no longer works very often. Thanks anyway :)

You will most likely find that just adjusting the stitch length and width controls for a while will correct the problem (if the machine has been sitting idle for some time the stepper motor linkages seem to stiffen up a bit but i have good success with continual adjustment until they free-up.

also try switching machine off and on again to ensure it resets correctly.

the combination of both above fixes works 95% of the time - otherwise, as you mentioned circuit board and or stepper motor replacement may be necessary (however if both length and width are playing up it is unlikely to be an electrical fault).

Can you use twin needles on bernina 1080

I have a Bernina 930 Record that will take twin (even triple) needles, so I don't know why your 1080 wouldn't. Just be sure your machine does not have the straight stitch plate on it, that your presser foot can accommodate zig-zag stitch, and that you carefully adjust any zig-zag stitch width so the needles do not hit the presser foot or stitch plate. I'd suggest installing the double needle and then carefully hand rotate the handwheel to see if the needles will hit anything. If you can make a full rotation of the handwheel without anything hitting, then slowly try it with the motor engaged.

How do I satin stitch h on a Bernina 1130s limited edition?

Satin stitch is a very wide zig-zag stitch with a very short stitch length. I do mine by dropping the feed dogs and guiding the material through by hand (a lot like darning).

Sews 1/4" and then sews in place

1) remove upper and bottom threads. Try sew without threads.
Is fabric transported corectly?

NO:
- Drop feed dog button is OFF
- Dust under stitch plate
- Transporter malfunction (must be taken for a service to the BERNINA dealer)

YES:
- Upper or bottom thread jammed
- The upper thread tension is too tight.
- Wrong needle used (probably small ...)

12 wt thread

12 wt thread generally will not work well in the bobbin...

"Aurifil 12wt Thread
Aurifil 12 wt thread is ideal for hand quilting, big stitch hand quilting and machine quilting. 12 weight thread creates a more defined and often primitive look. It's great for designs that use a longer stitch length if using a machine. When machine quilting with 12 wt thread, use 40 wt in the bobbin, increase your stitch length, lower your tension, use Topstitch size 90 needles and stitch slowly."

How do I use the button hole foot on the Bernina 807 minimatic?

There isn't an automatic button hole on this machine. You can do it manually. Thread the bobbin thread as usual, but put it through the little hole on the hook in the bobbin case. Set the stitch length between 0 and 1, like a nice satin stich. Set the needle position to the far left and the stitch width to 2. Sew down the left side. Center the needle, set the width to 4 and lower the feed dogs, stitch about 6 stitches across the bottom. Then reverse the direction, set the needle to the right, stitch width to 2 and go back up the right side. Lower the feed dogs again, set a wide stitch and finish the top.

Another good option is to buy a universal presser foot shank from Bernina and then attach an old cam type buttonhole attachment from Singer. They make beautiful buttonholes and you can even do a keyhole button hole.
