whenever i hit the start button, the "clean" button blinks repeatedly as if the cycle is complete

when i hit the start button, the green clean lite flash . From what i seen the lite blink 7 times then a short pause . will not do nothing else .

Wizcheck the manual. it sounds like a warning that would be in the troubleshooting section at the back.
usually the motor comes on to discharge any remaining water that could have been left in the bottom, then it fills. if it never gets to fill, then the problem is likely the pump motor unit. especially if you hear it try to run, but then it stops. it could be the fill valve too. if it runs to drain and then trys to fill but the valve does not open, it will not run.
it could also be a timer or capacitor.
