The screen is black.

I have a Toshiba Satellite. The screen looks completely black. You can see faintly that it has turned on and the desktop is there. You can barely see it turn it on and off, but you have no cursor or enter button capabilities. .

To verify if the video card has gone out, attach an external monitor and reboot.

You could have a faulty inverter or a CCFL lamp, To determine if you have a LCD screen, inverter or video card problem, read this and follow these instructions.
Defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashs on red/pink and off. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickering on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replacing the CCFL lamp.
Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power the monitor up first then the laptop, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is definitely the backlight. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

Either the backlight/inverter has died/dying or less likely if it has been roughed up, the ribbon cable to the screen may be loose.

If you see your HDD lights working and can tell that the PC is doing something such as spinning the drives, and such, try looking very closely at the screen from different angles and even with a light in hand. You may be able to see some action on the screen or even your desktop, eventually. If you can faintly see PC operations taking place on the laptop, then the issue is the backlight. This means a screen replacement. You can also plug an external monitor up to the unit for a test.

My daughter dropped my laptop and know the screen is just black the lights turn on but the screen is just black

Most likely the impact from the drop has broken the CCFL bulb that illuminates your display. These bulbs are built into the displays and run along the bottom of the display in a channel. They are not designed to withstand impacts and break very easily. Your screen most likly needs to replaced. Just to make though, look very carefully at the screen and try to shine a flashlight at the bottom of the screen angled upward. Can you see the desktop faintly on the panel? If you can barely make out the desktop or anything for that matter, then the screen itself is good but the bulb is in fact broken or the plug attaching the inverter to the screen has come dislodged from the impact. At any rate, the screen bezel has to come off and the lcd panel removed to check it thoroughly.

I have a toshiba satellite L305d-S5934 laptop and when i turn it on all i get is a black screen and sound from when its coming on but nothing shows on the screen how can i fix that

Look carefully at the screen, you should see some very faint images while its booting up. IF this is the case you need to replace the inverter.

Replacing a broken hard drive

Nope, the C series pre-dates SATA and there is no room for an adaper in the drive bay. Latitudes started supporting SATA in the later D series models. (My D600 was PATA but my D620 is SATA).

There are still plenty of PATA drives available. I recommend finding one with 7200RPM made by Seagate, Western Digital or Toshiba if you can. Hitachi and IBM have always burnt me.

You can always look up your Service Tag at support.dell.com for more details on your system.

If this helps please vote for my solution.

My laptop is a Toshiba satellite and after i login a black screen

Hi there. If you've had the laptop under a year, then you can take it back to the place where you bought it, and they can take a look. If anything's wrong, then it can be fixed under the manufacturer's warranty, which is normally for 12 months from purchase.

One thing I'd like to ask, can you see anything behind the black screen? I ask this, as I had a friend who had similar problem, but it was a faint black, with the cursor flashing, and he could faintly see the desktop in the background. I was wondering if this was the same for you.
