Question about Nokia E63 Cell Phone

8 Answers

I am syncing my E63 with gmail using microsoft mail for exchange. I am only syncing calendar and contents. The calendar sync works perfectly The contact sync works fine first go then after about 30minutes or so, information in each contact (usually the phone numbers) on the phone starts to disappear. The contacts also multiply, even though I have the sync set to manual. After about 45 minutes there is usually only the name, company and email data left. All phone numbers have disappeared. Jeff

    Thanks for this.

This gives me email via internet on my phone (as opposed pop email on planet 3 which I am currently running). It works no problem. however......how has it changed how I sync my contacts?

Are you suggesting that I now configure mail for exchange using the IMAP settings??

    Thanks

    Jeff

    Hi

Thanks for your commens on IMAP.
This give me email on IMAP rather than POP.
ow does that fix my problem of lossing data from contact when I synchronise them?

    Thanks

    Jeff

    Hello

I didn't mean to reject the first expert, just his intial comments that show me how to set an IMAP email account not how to set up contact syncing. I expect he was on the right track however - how do I get back to him? The second person's response is a comment not a solution and I don't really know what it means.

To repeat the problem, I can sync contacts between my nokia E63 and my gmail account using MfE. For the first sync everythings cool, then after that, the phone numbers start to disappear from the contacts.

The first respondent suggested it is because I'm using POP email not IMAP. I can set up an IMAP account no problem (I think), but I have no idea how to set up an IMAP MfE structure. So I still can't sync my email.

    Thanks

    Jeff

This is starting to get annoying. Regarding the prior response....I'm not using outlook.

I want a response that says:
    step 1. Do this.....
    step 2. Do this.....

Except for the first guy, who I can't get back in contact with??? (why not?), most of the responses just haven't made sense.

Once again, I need help in syncing my contacts between my gmail account on google and my Nokia E63. I can make the sync work with Mail for Exchange for the first go and then the phone numbers all disappear. I have also tried the "Sync" application on the E63 and a 3rd party server, "Neuvasync" both with the same results. The first respondent to my problem suggests it was a problem with POP and I should use IMAP. This may be right, but how do I set up my phone to sync contacts with Gmail using IMAP? I'm not a techo so you'll have to give me simple steps. But nor am I an idiot, I need something that actually makes sense.

    Thanks

    the sequence of events is:

    Senario 1
I enter a contact into Gmail.

I set MfE on my Nokia E63 to manual and include contacts in the sync content
I sync my E63 and Gmail using MfE
I exclude contacts from sync content in MfE

The contact from the Gmail list is now on my E63
The contact on Gmail has now doubled (there are two of the original) however neither of the contacts have lost any content. Interestingly the Gmail field labels will generally be different. That is, there are now two Bob Smiths but the first Bob has the phone number under "home" and the second Bob has the phone number under "other" for example. This happens with the email addresses as well.
After an amount of time (without any further syncing and contacts excluded from the MfE sync content), the phone number for the contact on my E63 disappears and the contact doubles.
This does not happen all the time.

    Scenario 2
    I enter a contact into my E63
    As above.......
I set MfE on my Nokia E63 to manual and include contacts in the sync content

I sync my E63 with Gmail using MfE

I exclude contacts from sync content in MfE

The contact from my E63 is now in Gmail. There is no content loss in gmail or on the phone

    Jeff

  • jeff_stitt01 Jul 29, 2009

Thanks for the detail in this reply.

I started with sync before I tried MfE and had the same problem. It's what drove me to try MfE in the first instance. That is, with sync set up as you have outlined, I get the first sync OK however after that the contacts multiply and lose content data (usually the phone numbers).

Incidentally, calendar sync worked OK with the sync application for me.

Does that shed light on the problem? With both Sync and MfE the contacts multiply and lose data after the first sync is complete. This happens even if I do the first sync manually then disable the connection.

Contacts that I add directly to the phone (Nokia E63) sync back to gmail OK and don't lose any content on my phone or on the google server.

For your info, the links to images you included in your response appeared as links not images.

    I'm still none-the-wiser

    Cheers

    Jeff

    Hi

In addition to my previous response to you, please note that I have had a similar problem using the Sync application on the phone.

That is, using Sync application instead of MfE, the first sync works OK then the contacts double and I loose content (usually the phone number as discussed).

    hope this helps

    Jeff

did you get my previous comment?

When I sync the contacts then remove contacts from the sync content in MfE on my phone. the contacts double up and I lose the phone numbers

    Thanks

    Jeff

    MNFisherman

Firstly, my research on the web shows that many people have this problem. Very people seem to be able to successfully synchronise contacts using MfE between Nokias and Gmail for the sample that have bothered to list there problems on the web.

the details you provided are readily available on the web on multiple sites and represent the standard set up for MfE. I have set up according to similar instructions and can sync ok in the first instance.

As posted, after the first instance, the contacts multiply and I lose data from each contact. Are you able to help me with the specific problem of contacts that multiply and data that disappears from the contacts?

    Thanks

    Jeff

  • jeff_stitt01 Aug 05, 2009

What does "syncing all without extra request" mean?

When you say "put it in a folder" I assume you mean "put the contacts I have sync'd from Gmail into a folder on my phone? Any particular folder? (phone memory or SIM memory for example).

Why would I do this, Are you saying that your contacts were multiplying and phone numbers were disappearing and doing this eliminated the problem? Or is this a guess?

  • jeff_stitt01 Aug 05, 2009

    Suraido

Have you received any of my subsequent comments?

I have done some further experimenting. I am losing phone numbers both with syncing and without.

1 If I sync large numbers of contacts sometimes I get the contacts onto my phone without any phone numbers in the first instance

2 If I sync small numbers of contacts (eg only one), I get the full contact details. If I then switch off all syncing functionality for contacts, the phone number(s) in the contact disappear after a short while.

    Does that help

    Jeff

  • jeff_stitt01 Aug 09, 2009

    I am not using oulook
    I am not using IMAP

I am syncing between my laptop and gmail using Mozilla thunderbird, this works fine. It is the sync between my phone and my gmail account that appears to be the problem.

More recently I see that I can actually turn MfE off after the first sync and my contacts still multiply and I still lose data from them.

If I enter the contact in to the phone directly I do not have this problem

  • jeff_stitt01 Aug 09, 2009

Did you get my early comments?

    Can you reply please.

Jeff,

This is not a common problem. Once you sync your gmail account to your phone using the Microsoft Exchange, all the contacts, emails, calendar, notes and task should be synchronized to the phone without losing any information.

But there are things that you need to verify first before you did that:

1. You should verify if gmail supports MS Exchange. As far as I know, gmail supports POP3 and IMAP, but not sure with the EXchange.

2. If gmail supports MS Exchange, you should verify if that exchange supports symbian OS (symbian is the OS of Nokia).

Question: Do you have a back-up of those lose contacts? If not, call Nokia to see if you still have an option to recover those missing contacts. Check also if there's a setting on the phone that would allow you to restore deleted contacts.

Last: Remove the battery from the phone, leave it for 5 minutes, put the battery back and turn the phone back ON. Then check the contacts.

You will either need to reinstall the program or use a free program called bitpim. You can find it at bitpim.org

You should also make sure the latest drivers are installed.

in an announcement blog post, Google Mobile’s product manager, Marcus Foster, noted a couple of issue. You should keep in mind that Google Sync may remove all existing contacts and calendar events from your phone, so make sure to back up any important data before you set it up!

Introduction of the calendar and contacts sync offering is a great move by Google and the lack of the Calendar support is not a big as you can use the CalSyncS60 app which provides easy two-way synchronization between Nokia S60 device and Google Calendar.
Google Sync for Mobile

Open your Contacts application
Select 'Synchronization > Settings' from the 'Options' menu. This will .open the Sync applicationhttp://www.google.com/help/hc/images/mobile_98320b_en.gif
From the Options menu select 'New sync profile'http://www.google.com/help/hc/images/mobile_98320c_en.gif
Choose any name you like for 'Sync profile name'http://www.google.com/help/hc/images/mobile_98320d_en.gif
Select and click 'Applications'
Note: You will see a list of all content types that your phone can synchronize; however, currently Google Sync only supports Contacts.
Select and click 'Contacts'

Make sure the 'Include in Sync' option is set to 'Yes'
Define the 'Remote Database' option as 'contacts'. It needs to be spelled exactly like this (lower case), or Google Sync will not work.http://www.google.com/help/hc/images/mobile_98320e_en.gif
Click 'Back' to exit this screen and save your settings
Ensure that only Contacts have 'Settings defined' and all other content types say 'Sett. not defined'http://www.google.com/help/hc/images/mobile_98320f_en.gif

Click 'Back' to exit this screen and save your settings
Select and click 'Connection Settings'
Enter the following values:

Server version: 1.2
Server ID: Google (capital 'G' is important)
Data bearer: Internet
Access point: the Internet access point for your carrier.http://www.google.com/help/hc/images/mobile_98320g_en.gif
Host address: https://m.google.com/syncml (Important to enter https for a secure connection)
Port: 443
User name: your Google Account username, e.g. you@googlemail.com
Password: your Google password
Leave other values unchangedhttp://www.google.com/help/hc/images/mobile_98320h_en.gif

Click 'Back' to exit this screen and save your settings
Click 'Back' again to exit the Sync profile settings
Highlight the your Sync profile and select 'Synchronize' from the 'Options' menu to synchronize your contacts with Googlehttp://www.google.com/help/hc/images/mobile_98320i_en.gif

Ok i know this is probably starting to get very frustrating for you since I am yet another tech that you haven't talked to yet, so i will need some info you probably already gave out, but i do not have access to what the other techs have asked you or any reference that could help me understand the messages between your posts, so i will need to start over and ask you some question so i can be sure to eliminate possible causes for your problem and better orient myself to find the correct one. So the first thing I really want to be sure to correctly understand if the disappearing numbers thing. I know the first syncing works fine, but do the phone numbers disappear on their own after time WITHOUT syncing a 2nd time, or do they disappear only after syncing a 2nd or 3rd time or more?? Cause if you do have syncing on manual, it should not update on its own, so if the phone numbers disappear on their own without you syncing it a second or 3rd time, then the pop server and protocol has nothing to do with it. If this is what you meant, then the problem would suggest a malicious software at work in your cellphone without you knowing it. Yes it is possible to get a virus on your phone as most phones nowadays are actually closer to a PDA or any small portable computer than an actual original cell phones which had no flash memory or any real computing power. If this is not what you meant and the phone numbers disappear after you sync a second or 3rd time, then it means the phone probably has some problems with it's internal flash memory that prevents or corrupts data that is overriden, but not new data that was not there before. And yes that is also possible, as overwriting data requires the device to flush old data, and if it cannot do so all the time, it will end with bits of new and old data mixed together and it will make no sense to the device, kind of like talking half english and half russian to a 70 year old person who barely understands english.:P So start by please telling me precisely how and when the phone numbers disappear, and i do not need to know how many minutes it takes, just need to know if it does so on its own without resyncing a 2nd time, or if it only happens after syncing multiple times, and I should already be in a better postition to help out and figure out what the next step should be. Thank you for your patience and understanding, and hope to hear from you soon.:)

Not all of your default views in the Gmail web interface will appear in your IMAP client at this time. Most users should see all of the labels in their web interface replicated as folders in their IMAP client. If you're using an English version of Outlook 2002, Outlook 2003, or Outlook Express, but your web interface is set to a language that uses non-Latin characters, your folder names will not display properly. In addition, some subject and sender names may show as garbled text. This is an issue with these versions of Microsoft Outlook. For more details, please contact Microsoft's customer service department.

Jeff,

if the answer below does not satisfy your question, please let me know so I can adjust me answers.

gmail does not have support for exchange nor active sync. you may use POP or IMAP instead and use data transfers to get your calendar and contacts.

  1. Enable IMAP in your Gmail settings.
  2. Open the Start menu and select Programs > Messaging > New E-mail Account.
  3. Enter your Gmail address (including '@gmail.com') in the E-mail Address field*. Google Apps users, enter your full address in the format 'username@your_domain.com'*.
    * Windows Mobile 6.1 users: Enter an unintelligible email address(such as 'g@g') at this step. This will bypass the automaticconfiguration for POP access.
  4. Uncheck the box that asks to get settings automatically from the Internet and select Next.
  5. Select Internet e-mail as your email provider in the drop-down menu.
  6. Enter your name as you want it to appear in sent emails.
  7. Enter a descriptive name for the email account and select Next.
  8. Enter 'imap.gmail.com' in the Incoming Mail Server field.
  9. Select IMAP4 as the Account type from the drop-down menu and select Next.
  10. Enter your full email address (including '@gmail.com' or '@your_domain.com') and password.
  11. Select Next.
  12. Enter 'smtp.gmail.com' in the Outgoing (SMTP) Mail Server field.
  13. Make sure that the Outgoing server requires authentication box is checked.
  14. Select the Advanced Server Settings link.
  15. Make sure that the Require SSL box is checked for both incoming and outgoing emails.
  16. Select The Internet as the network connection from the drop-down menu.
  17. Select Done and then Next.
  18. Select how often you want your phone to send/receive emails from the drop-down menu.
  19. For more download options, select the Review all download settings link.
  20. Select Finish.
  21. Check our recommended client settings, and adjust your client's settings as needed.
hope this helps

regards,

voodoo

How do i sync my htc hd7 phone (windows mobile) with outlook xp

I have Outlook 2010 client on my PC. My ISP mail account is forwarded to Outlook via POP3 mail account. I also have a gmail account to which I forward all mail to from my ISP mail address. My gmail calendar is bi-directionally synchronised to my Outlook calendar using 'Google Calendar Sync' and likewise my gmail contacts are bi-directionally synchronised to my Outlook contacts using 'Go Contact Sync'. then it was a simple matter on my Windows Phone 7 to create a Google mail account to my gmail account. I can create contacts, calendar entries in either Outlook, Gmail or my phone and they are all sync'd with each other. 'Google Calendar Sync' and 'Go Contact Sync'' are free downloads.

Can't sync outlook 2003 calendars with iPhone 3g

Synchronization of iPhone 3G with your Outlook 2003 will depend on the type of account that you would like to create. It will depend also on the Web mail that you are going to download.

Example:
1. The e-mail that you would like to download to your iPhone is your Gmail account. You have to enable POP in your Gmail sesttings.

2. On your iPhone > go to Home screen > tap settings...

3. Go to Mail > Add Account > Other > Continue...

4. For the host name: pop.gmail.com

5. For the username: type your complete e-mail address

6. For the Outgoing mail SMTP Host name: type smtp.gmail.com

7. Tap Save..

8. To verify your Advance configuration: Go to settings > click the account that you havve created > Advance

Incoming server port:
-You may use 110 or 993
-Type your password

Outgoing settings:
- You may use 25, 2525, 587 or 465
- Type your password again.

You're done.

NOTE: I just use Gmail as an example. Your incoming mail server will depend on your Web mail settings.. You may contact your e-mail administrator and ask for the Incoming mail server, Outgoing mail SMTP, ask if your account requires encryption or not.

How do I synch outlook 2003 with iphone

You didn't say whether you're trying to sync everything (mail, calendars, contacts) or just some things or one thing (like contacts only). I don't know if you're using an Exchange server or even if you have the info you'll need to sync with an Exchange server.

I have a Windows mobile device (AT&T Tilt) running Outlook 2007 and everything is sync'd. We also started purchasing the iphone for our employees and sync their email, calendar and contacts to their phone.

I could probably give you step-by-step information (based on how I do this for my users at work) if I knew whether you'll use iTunes to do this or Exchange Active Sync and what you want to sync between your phone and outlook. One method (iTunes) will only update your data between Otulook and the phone when you connect it to the computer with Outlook configured on it but, the way we do it at work, they receive email, data, changes, etc in real time.

Try using this link http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/mail/

What you will find here is support topics and instructions for Exchange Active Sync, setting up email accounts, troubleshooting for contact and calendar syncing.

You can also search support on Apple's Web site. Entering the keywords: iphone outlook 2003 will bring up a lot of support info.

You can use iTunes or MobileMe for synchronization. If using iTunes then try this:

You can configure which items are synchronized during a one time set up process. After initial set up, each time you connect the iphone to your computer, the changes made on your computer or device are synchronized.

  1. Connect your iPhone to your computer. iTunes should open automatically.
  2. In iTunes, in the source list, under Devices, click the entry for your iPhone.
  3. Click the Info tab.
  4. Select which items you would like to sync. For example to sync only calendars, under Calendars, you would click Sync calendars from, and then click Outlook.
  5. Do one of the following:
  • To synch all calendars, click All Calendars.
  • To limit the calendars that are synched, click Selected calendars and then click the calendars you want to sync.
6. Click Apply.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for using Fixya and you can let me know how helpful I've been by rating this solution.
