My wife and I both bought webcams so we can see each other while I am on the road. Both have a microphone included. We are chatting through Windows live messenger. We cannot get the audio to work. What am I missing?

I recently just bought a new laptop (compaq presario cq56) it has a webcam and all but its says please turn on the webcam, how do i turn on the camera?

This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows 7 . A webcam is built into the frame above the display screen on some HP notebooks. Since there is no power button or desktop icon for the webcam, the only way to test and use the webcam is to open a webcam application. Many of the applications used in Vista, such as CyberLink YouCam and QuickPlay, are incompatible with Windows 7. However, HP offers the MediaSmart suite for Windows 7 which includes a webcam application. HP MediaSmart Webcam can record videos, take snapshot photos, add text and animations to the image, track your movements with an avatar, and allow you to adjust the settings of the webcam. Many people use their webcam in a video chat. You can use HP MediaSmart Webcam with most third party video chat programs. Uninstall it again. then clean your registry for errors. do not plug the webcam. intall the drivers found in the CD include. after install the drivers needed. connect the webcam. then test.

Camera works but skype tells me the microphone is muted.

Go to Tools | Options | Audio Settings which is how the audio and microphone settings are adjusted in Skype.

Your microphone might be muted in the Windows multimedia sound control panel - if you double-click on the speaker in the Windows taskbar you will get the mixer control panel - select Recording devices if the Microphone is not shown, make sure the MUTE checkbox is clear.
