Correct - the laser may be out of alignment - or simply dirty.
In either case - a reapir shop in your are can Clean/re-align for under $50.
Alignment is not a DIY repair - as a special template(s) is required to get *** at the correct angle.
You can attempt a cleaning with isopropyl alcohol and a q-tip.... don't bother with the "DVD Lense cleaners" as they do not work.

Thanks for using FixYa - please accept this answer to remove it from the work queue.

We have the flat screen and dvd combo, the dvd dosen't work, it says no disc, when it's loaded.

It can be as simple as dirty LENS or the LASER is just worn out. you may be better off getting the external DVD player instead, it will be less than what it will cost to have it fixed.

So, my 3 year old got a hold of my portable TruTech DVD player and now it doesn't work. There is a black ribbon thing when you open the DVD player, one end of it is hooked to something, but the other end...

The black ribbon thing is the wire harness to the optical laser of your DVD player. It normally has a connector that is plugged into a printed circuit board inside the player. It is best to have a technician plug it back in to test the unit. The laser of these units can be harmful to eyesight when operating a powered unit opened. The laser may also need to be "calibrated" or aligned. Hope this has been helpful.

Trutech 17 inch tv dvd player the dvd spins seems not fast enough

The first step is to clean the lens of the optics assembly (if you can get to it) carefully using a cotton swab and alcohol. If that does not resolve the problem, try playing a music CD. If the music CD plays but a DVD does not, it suggests that the laser is starting to fail and needs to be replaced. CDs require far less laser power to read than DVDs.

Hope this helps,
Dan

Heres what mine did:no picture no sound, when i hit the remote theindicator light went out....six months old, cant findany info on it, cant get a hold of anyone at Trutech.
Soi took it apart, on the board that the power cord is attached to, ifound six blown capacitors. There is also a big ass one in the middleof that board which looked ok but blew out the bottom.I replaced them, and im watching it as i type.
Its fairly easy but if your not comfortable soldering on a cheap circuit board, take it to someone.
I hope it helps, i think this repair will fix the other Trutech models with the same problems.
