Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

I need to extract an archive named MBE2_image using WinRar in order to download Western Digital software for My Book Essential Edition 2.0 external hard drive. Is the first step to drag and drop the MBE2_image file into the WinRar icon? I am having trouble using the WinRar extraction utility. My computer is Windows XP. My understanding is that I am supposed to extract the contents of the MBE2_image.zip file directly to my My Book Essential Edition 2.0 external hard drive. I have tried several times to do this and have not been successful. I was unable to save the software that came with the drive before I reformatted the drive. I don't know how to indicate the path for the file to extract to or what that path should be. The My Book Essential 2.0 external hard drive is designated as F:\ based on the installation I did when I used the software that came with the drive. I have tried to extract to the F:\ designation but that doesn't seem to work. I keep getting the message "unable to launch installer" when I double click on the file "WD Setup.exe". I would greatly appreciate any help on these subjects.

Right click on MBE2_image and click on extract all
then it will ask to save and that time u will give the path of external drive. This way u can store the actual contents to ur hard drive

  1. To restore the Western Digital icon to the drive letter for the external drive in "My Computer".
  2. Please go to the Western Digital Download Library and download the WD Logo Icon which has a file name of External Icon.zip when you download it.
  3. Save the file to your desktop and use a file compression software like Winzip to extract the files inside the .zip file to your desktop. When it's unzipped, it will create a folder named "ExternalIcon" on your desktop.
  4. Double-click on the ExternalIcon folder. It will open a Windows Explorer showing a folder named, Autorun, and a file named, Autorun.inf.Double-click on My Computer and it will open.
  5. Double-click on the driver letter that represents the Western Digital drive you want the icon on and it will open.
  6. Highlight the Autorun folder and the Autorun.inf file. Right-click on them, and left-click on Cut when the Menu appears.
  7. Right-click in the open space of the drive that you opened in the new Explorer window, and then left-click on Paste.
  8. Close both Explorer windows, safely remove the external hard drive by using the Safely Remove icon in the system tray, shut down the computer, and unplug the external drive from the computer.
  9. After you reboot into Windows, reconnect the external drive to the computer again, and the Western Digital Icon should now be displayed with the drive letter in My Computer.

If these steps do not correct the problem, you will need to re-format your External Hard Drive ***WARNING*** FORMATTING A HARD DRIVE WILL ERASE, YOU WILL LOSE, ALL DATA

I have a 500GB my book essential edition external harddrive and i am only able to access 10GB of my space, please help

while you only have 10 gig of space "used?" take what you have off the drive and use the disk that came with your WD MYBook and reformat the drive into "2" drives..........Depending what OS (operating software) you are using some have a limitation to show the correct amount this is why I would suggest that you split the drive into sections or just reformat and see what you get

Try reinstalling without unchecking the other software installations. Some bundles do not allow you to install some of the software as per their various agreements. You can simply uninstall the other software afterward. Be forewarned though, you may lose the functionality of the software you want to keep if they have it linked in some fashion.

Western digital my passport 320 file path too deep

The "path" is the full name of a file or a folder, e.g.,

C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

If the path has too many characters, you get the error-message that you reported.

If you can, rename one of the folders, using a shorter name.
