You may have to change the magneto.
That's the return circuit which charges the battery.

I am looking for a parts and repair manual for a 2004 model #385016X78A Murray ride on mower.

Murray went out of business and was bought out by new outfit. Do not know if new Murray (kept the name) manufacturer will support the older products produced previously. You can always check and cross your fingers.

How do you check a ignition switch on a murray riding lawn mower to make sure it is operating properly?

You will need a multimeter... then you will need to check each wire port to see if voltage is registering . I would also disconnect the safety switch under the seat or.. plus put the emergency brake on as well... anything and all that will stop the engine from getting the signal to the coil to start up..

my specialty, but, you didnt post what the problem is,so,here goes,if it wont start,it is probably a bad safety switch, take the small black wire off of the coil,if it starts, then its a safety switch,if it doesnt then it is the coil,if it only clicks with a charged battery,it is the solenoid, turn on your key and short between the two big bolts on it if it starts it is bad,if you need a belt,i will need the numbers under the seat, otherwise i will try to find them for you,i will post a user manual for you here, Murray 425607x52A 42 34 Lawn Tractor Parts

Murray select riding mower model 309000x8NA won't start?

check ground wire and posts for continuity between battery and starter, if you don't have a multimeter, remove, clean and replace all ground connectins. If that isn't it and you are sure that your battery is good and you've got good juice to the starter than the starter needs op-checked, remove it from the engine and engage it, if gear shifts out and spins rapidly you may have engine problem. Hope this helps...

Murray 18hp 42 deck wont start

Hi.

The best advice here is to put your battery on charge, and, while it is charging, remove each connection, and clean the terminals back to "bright and shiney". The clicking noise is probably the solenoid trying to pull in to provide power to the starter. There also sounds like the comnnection to the starter needs to be removed and cleaned. If this connection is dirty or loose, it can arc and smoke without cranking. Also, if the terminals at your solenoid are corroded, the motor cannot recharge the battery on the run, and loss of power to the battery will result. Clean your connections, and try again!
This should correct your issues. In extreme conditions, it may be necessary to replace your wire from the solenoid to the starter, if it is significantly deteriorated, but I'd clean it all up first.
Best regards, --W/D--

with switch off try crossing out the solenoid. take an old screwdriver and place it on the two metal contacts jetting out from the solenoid usually by the battery or close to the ignition. if strarter engages when this is donr replace solenoid. if not replace starter. hope this helps.
