My Lowrance X15 Combo Fish Finder Keeps Flashing when it is tring to read the depth on Sonar Mode. The transducer is lvel with the bottom of the bot, it worked great for a few year, now I am having problems with it. The transducer is clicking when I turn it on. If I rub my hand on the bottom of theransducer it makes lines on the screen which means that is is receiving. Could you please give me any and all information regarding what it keeps flashing. Check for corrosion around the transducer - or a broken/cracked wire.
You may be able to transmit and recieve short distances - but you are experiencing problems at greater distances.
There are no real limits to how deep the echo goes down and returns. The whole system depends on the transducer housing which contains a man-made crystal called a piezoelectric device. When it receives a signal from the unit it converts it into a mechanical sound wave that is sent down to the bottom below the boat. When this wave encounters an object it rebounds - creating an echo. This echo is bounced from the bottom and back to the transducer, where it's decoded and sent to the display unit as incoming signals.
These sound waves not only bounce from the bottom but from any object encountered between the transducer and the bottom. This includes fish, schools of bait, weeds and underwater structures.
This sounding process is continuous, even when the boat is moving. As the moving sound wave travels forward the signals of everything it encounters are sent back in amazingly clear pictures. Effectively you are seeing everything that's under the boat.
How quickly this echo signal process takes depends on wattage (power), the transducer and the depth of the water. The higher the wattage the more powerful and quicker the signal is processed from the transducer.
In actual practice the wattage is not really that important when fishing in shallow water, as little difference shows up between low and high wattage models.

Look into replacing the cable before replacing the transducer.

It sounds like it my be working properly - however the Lowrance isnt getting the right (clean) information back.

If the cable checks out good - a new transponder is in your future :D

Look into either a through the hull transducer or mount on a piece of wood epoxied to your hull for ease of changing it next time... transponders usually last 3 seasons in my experience.

Thanks!!

Why don't I see fish on my lowrance elite5 hdi fish locator

Sounds like you do not have your transducer connected.
You will know it is working if you have a bottom sounding. If you have a bottom sounding (depth reading) and it is correct then you may have to fine tune the finder to see the fish.
I have the same finder on my boat. http://njsaltfish.com/index.php/captainsfocus?sid=61

Lowrance Elite 4X fish finder that reads between 1.5' and 2.5'

Hey Anon
The transducer installation is more important than anything.. next to correct wiring! You must make sure the mounting is good,,, if its outside the hull, make sure its sitting 1/16th below the hull with no obstructions.. if its inside the hull, the medium you used to fix the puck to the hull must be porosity free and the puck sitting as level with the WATER as possible..
Now, take the manual to the lake with you and DO NOTHING but read the manual and apply what you read to the unit,,, read -repeat - read-repeat.. forget about fishing... now read-repeat and learn... IF nothing seems to be reading correctly.. its probably the transducer installation.. YOU DID use a/the transducer specifically for this unit!!

Built in transducer is not picking up/transferring depth to graph

I havew a Minn Kota trolling motor on a Z21 Ranger. Minn Kota has a built in (puck type) transducer on the motor. I have a lowrance 135x on the front. The lowrance will read the temp but will blink the depth. I switched out the depth finder with another 135x with the same results. I have a 522c gps unit networked together and mounted on the console that works fine. Any suggestions on the problem with the 135x?

How do you get the fish to show up on the screen on a lowrance X96 depth finder? We just got it and there is no manual with it.

Are you looking for the little fish symbols?
Press MENU, down arrow to SONAR FEATURES and press ENT. Arrow to FISH SYMBOLS and press ENT. Press EXIT twice. Any significant return in the water will now show up as a fish symbol.

Are you looking for the fish arches?
You won't get any arches unless the boat is moving and of course there are fish passing within the transducers signal. The shallower the water, the less area you are covering and less likely to get a fish return.

There is an OK guide to understanding what you see on the sonar screen at the link below. It if pretty technical but parts of it may help you out.

Proper set up for lowrance sonar

Where do you use your boat?

There are so many variables it's hard to fit it all here, but there are some excellent tutorials on the Lowrance website. The most important thing is to pick the right frequency, for the depth of the water. (200khz for less than 70', and 50 khz for greater depths). Depending on how serious you are about fishing, there are a lot of extras that you may never use. The key is to figure out which features will help you the most and forget about the rest.

You may also get some help at this link: FixYa Service Directory

It's common for SONAR to lose contact with the bottom at high speeds. The better the transducer installation, the faster you can go. Turbulence and bubbles will cause the SONAR to drop out. Lowrance's transducer installation guide explains it very clearly.
