It would help to know what vehicle you have. When multiple items quit working it helps to know if they share a common fuse or relay. Visually check all fuses. There are also hidden fusible links in the power wires, usually near the battery or the starter motor.
I would buy the converter, only if you really need one,and install yourself.
It should be about half the price you quoted or less. Buy at auto parts store.
You can not not buy another car for the price of a new converter!!
Most auto upholstery shops can fix this - mine cost about $600 for a tinted plastic. Clear plastic was the same cost. I had mine done in Costa Mesa, CA
John, What is the problem you are trying to fix? I have a rebuilt fuel distributor if you need one. part number: 0 438 101 006

My girlfriend had the same problem, so we took it to the local dealer in Costa Mesa, CA and were told she needed a new engine to the tune of 5K. We decided to take it to our local mechanic and he discovered that the “ignition control box”, which apparently has the antitheft controls too and shuts the flow of gas to the engine because it thinks its being stolen when it malfunctions, was causing the starting problem. Once, the box was replaced it worked fine. Because the IBC controls antitheft, it will need to be “reprogrammed” be someone that has access to the proper equipment or the dealer. I think the whole thing was about $800 - $900. Sure beats $5,000
Your best bet would be on eBay - many sellers there have flat shipping rates. Buying directly from a dealer or store is definitely going to cost a fortune. If a seller on eBay doesn't have a flat rate option, you may be stuck buying one and paying a big shipping bill though - it's hard to say what will happen.
