Question about Dryers

2 Answers

I just got a maytag Atlantis intellidry from a friend. We had to change the electrical cord from a 4 prong to a 3 prong. After drying a load of laundry, I went back to the laundry room some time later and the dryer was burning hot. It seems that the heating element never went off. You could just about fry an egg on top of the dryer. Could this be caused from an improperly installed electrical cord?

Yes the drum and blower stopped. It did take about 10 min. before the dryer started heating on the first run. Now, after checking that the cord was installed properly, we get no heat at all.

Thank you for your quick response! My problem is solved. Apparently when the people who brought the dryer to my daughter in law set it up; they dislodged the exhaust pipe. This left the pipe moving loosley within the dryer. Inadvertantly the pipe had ground out on the wire which provides power to the heating element. This was why the heat wouldnt turn off. The reason it wouldnt heat after the first use was due to moving the dryer and the pipe pulled the power connector from the element. I really should have inspected the dryer set up more closely.

Not likely a cord problem as it dried a load. But the problem may be why the friend gave it to you! The control unit may be faulty or a relay is sticking closed. Good way to start a fire! Did the machine stop the drum and blower normally when the cycle was finished?

You may have tripped the circuit breaker pair for the dryer in the house electrical panel. Push them OFF, then ON. If dryer now works again, unplug the dryer power. Some electrical trouble-shooting is now in order to find what is keeping the heater running. Does the heater start working as soon as the power is plugged in without starting anything? Look for a relay that is stuck closed. (plug pulled)

I have a 3 prong cord, the outlet is 4, colors in back dont match

Hi,
Hook the green directly to the metal of the machine anywhere you can, like under a screw that holds something.
Hook the white to the white.
Then the red and black can go on the other two, it does not natter which one is on what they are interchangable. To make it easy, go black on black and red on blue.
Plug it in and
Then you are good to go!!

The dryer has a four prong male plug and the outlet is a three prong female - which do I change? the dryer cord is the easiest, but how do I connect the leads?

4 PRONG PLUG WIRING: 2 HOTS(RED&BLACK) 1 NEUTRAL(WHITE) 1 GROUND(GREEN). 3 PRONG PLUG WIRING: 2 HOTS&1 NEUTRAL. YOU MUST USE 2 HOTS & 1 NEUTRAL ON A 3 WIRE PLUG. THE GROUND WIRE(GREEN) WHICH IS HOOKED TO FRAME OF THE DRYER IS NOT USED ON OLDER 3 WIRE PLUGS. IT IS AN ADDITIONAL SAFTEY GROUND ON NEWER MODEL 4 WIRE PLUGS.

Can you tell me how to hookup the three wires of 3 prong cord to the back of dryer that came with 4 wires(4 prong)? Which one goes where? I only have 3 prong plugs at my house. Thank you.

The following link explains how to connect a power cord to your appliance:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r793520-3_prong_4_prong_power_cord_conversion

Now keep in mind, some newer appliances REQUIRE a 4-prong plug in order to work properly. You may consider having a four-prong outlet installed to accomodate your dryer.

You can try these steps by referring to to section that discusses converting from a 4-prong to a 3-prong power cord.

If you have questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.
