Question about Bosch 1199VSR 8.5 Amp 1/2 Inch Hammer Drill

2 Answers

I have the same problem. 1199VSR hammer drill. The tool is 18 months old (out of warranty) and has barely been used - I think I used it for for two jobs - all together about 12 1/2" diameter holes. It runs fine in reverse. It starts occasionally in forward - perhaps 1 time out of 10. When it does start in forward it will just cut out randomly.

A question for those of you who have repaired these before - if I order the brushes from Bosch, do they come with new springs? I can't seem to find a part number for the springs individually.

    Thanks, David

I opened up the back of the case (to get to the brushes) and the brushes and springs look fine. There is no sign of burning or discoloration and the brushes have plenty of length to them.

Are there any electrical measurements I can make to verify the brushes are really OK?

This piece of junk tears out the brushes time after time. Mine were replaced 4 times under warranty. Finally gave up. The brush holders will not take the vibration of hammer drilling. It is a design problem. Repair the unit and use ONLY for straight drilling.

My unit caused the brushes to chip and become very angled. At that point they would stick a bit in the holders and not make contact. Vibrating the drill could get them to contact for a bit and running in reverse it would do that, but once hammer drilling in forward was started the brushes would bounce out of contact and jam away from the commutator. Same thing happened after several warranty repairs for the problem.

Check the motor brushes for breakage, badly worn, or weak springs (heat damage). Keep track of brush wear pattern when removing and reinstall in the same orientation.

If you can, run the drill with the brushes exposed--first in reverse and then forward. Look for bad sparking where either brush touches the commutator. If it won't run in forward, try turning the chuck in the forward direction somewhat (tighten the chuck beforehand) to check for intermittent brush contact. If the brushes don't display any particular problem, then suspect a bad forward/reverse switch or a loose wire to the f/r switch.

Howdy, I am willing to confirm what I believe you already know; it's cooked. Now about fixing it You can do it yourself with bosch parts for almost the cost of the drill, or have it done for somewhere between free and ? by Bosch depending on how long you have had it. Bosch has a prorate form of warranty repair that sometimes works out really well.

Whichever way you choose to go, this link will help you it get dealt with pretty darn quickly:

Grease type in power tool

Most tools use grease that is supplied by the tool manufactures and you can purchase it from the proper service center. In an emergency you can use a standard ep2 grease but usually this standard grease will shorten the life of the tool or cause it to fail completely so it should be washed out as soon as possible and replaced with the proper grease the factory recommends

Bosch 1199vsr stopped working while drilling through concrete. The reverse works. Help

your tool should have a rotating reversing switch and the contacts for the forward rotation might be dirty or burnt. I would unplug the tool and remove the screw holding the back handle half on and look to see if anything is burnt or just dirty or bent. If you have an air compressor try blowing thru all areas of the tool. Let me know if this doesn't work you can also go to Boschtools.com and type in your model number on the left hand side after clicking on manuals.

These tear the brushes out. You can not use them for hammering. It is a design problem.

Replace the brushes and use only for straight drilling.

Inside there is a little plastic shaft, where the selector hooks to. They have had problems over the years stripping. Replacement part is still plastic. Yay! You may need a bearing puller or find some way to get the clutch off the shaft. Lemme know. Please rate me
