Hi, there is a circulation motor that has an impeller attached to it. this is called the wash motor. it is located under the sump area. this wash impeller has become damaged and, you will need to replace it asap. this is causing the grinding noise. the impeller may be stripped or, it has slipped off the shaft. replacing this damaged impeller will fix this issue.

When doing laundry, it sounds like my washers gears are grinding very loudly. What would that be?

I think you are correct, I would suggest replacing it especialy if it is over 7 years old or has a lot of use. If you have oil in the wash you seal failed.

If it is more then 5 years old, most likly the transmision, parts are high, within $150 of buying a new one.

When washer is started make loud grinding noise

Very likely the bearings in the motor have begun to fail. You can replace the motor, but for a 15 year old DW, sometimes it makes better sense to just buy a new one. Depends on the features the old DW has, vs new, vs motor replacement cost.

Reply back and we can you more.

Maytag Performa top loader is making grinding noises

The agitators are a pop-on fit. Make sure that the agitator is firmly seated on the shaft. Lift it up and if it moves easily adjust it to the splines on the shaft and press it back into place.

Noisy wash cycle

if it's 10 year old it's not worth repairing if the transmission is bad.  However, if it's only the $20 coupler that connects the motor to the transmission.  Fix it.

My 10 yr old kichenaid dishwasher is making a grinding noise do y

Well a grinding noise could come from any moving part. It could be the wash arm, motor, or pump. Remove the wash arm and clean all that you can reach with a nylon brush. If that doesn't do it, call the repairman.
