It seems the freezer frosts to a point where the fridge and freezer both stop cooling.

Check to see if there is frost on the back wall of the freezer . Also check to see if the fan in the freezer is working . If there is frost , then you have a defrost problem . Without brand and model number , unable to advise further .

Your post is very confusing. can you clarify it please? Is the unit not cooling or, is it freezing with no type of control?

On my GE side by side (model GSS20IEMDWW), the evaporator coils froze over due to constant running of the compressor. The compressor was constantly running due to a faulty temp sensor in the fresh food side of the unit. The sensor was apparently reading too hot, thus never signalling the computer that it should stop trying to cool.

This could be what the original poster was attempting to describe.

Bottom freezes over, top won't cool. No circulation of air to top. Freezer freezing over.

This seems to be a refrigerator problem. The circulation fan in the freezer may not be working. Check the fan.

Freezer not freezing but cools like the refrigerator would. Refrigerator not cooling enough. the cover in the back of the refrigerator was off. I reconnected but the freezer still won't freeze

is the freezer fan running? is there frost on the rear freezer wall if so it would be a defrost issue. if no frost on freezer rear panel it would sound like a bad compressor or sealedsystem leak.
