Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

PS3 is backwards compatible with PS2 games, and USED to play them

Basically, my PS3 has been playing PS1 and PS2 games for over a year. I move the system to my new apartment, hook everything back up how it was before (when it worked) and suddenly, the PS2 games will show the Playstation logo screen then it will go completely black - and only the sound will come through.

Common sense tells me that perhaps there is a problem with my HDMI cable and perhaps the PS2 can't read through it - but then why have the logo screen come up? And even worse, why have worked before this point?

It is not the PS3 - and it is not the PS2 disk, it has to be something within the settings. I could try taking it out of the HD output and see if it'll work, but it was working fine with the HD output only four days ago.

No damage has come to the system - and it plays PS3 fine. I recently updated it to work online, but it wouldn't work even before I updated it - so I doubt that's an issue.

Any suggestions before I boot it out the window?

Did you get a fix for this yet? What TV are you using? I have the same problem, and it has to do with a system update. When we first bought the PS3, it did this, then one of the system updates fixed it, and it worked fine for well over a year, until a recent system update which I assume changed something about how the PS2 games are read or rendered. I can now play them only through the component cables, which doesn't give me nearly as nice a picture. Any help with this would be appreciated. (PS2 SYSTEM DATA doesn't help).

In Playstation Store, you should download (for free) the PS2 SYSTEM DATA (something like this).
if you have formated your system, the files were erased, and the games won't play until you download the backwards comparibility files again.

SOURCE: My PS2 will not play PS2 games, but it will play PS1 games

Hi
If it will play DVD's this is a good sign. You will only need to clean the lens of the laser. Also clean the hub that the Disc rides on.
I hope your in the right posting area, this is for the Phat PS2 consoles with the drawer that comes out to put the CD in. Procedure is different for Slim PS2.

  1. Disconnect power and turn the case upside down.
  2. Remove the screw covers to expose the case screws. These are little square pieces or square rubber pads. You can use a thin knife blade to pry the hard plastic squares up.
  3. Remove all the screws.
  4. REmove the Warranty sticker to the right edge of the power socket.
  5. Turn the PS2 over to set it right side up.
  6. lift the top cover from the back and pull it forward slightly to clear the CD tray. Be careful of a possibly Ribbon cable attached to the lid going to the REset/Eject buttons. Roll the cover over to the right leaving the ribbon intact.
  7. Remove the Cd tray lid.
  8. Polish the Laser lens, and remove any lint or hair from the Cd area. Use Alcohol and cotton swabs to clean the laser lens. By the way, Alcohol will damage a PS2 Slim lens. All lens are not created equally.
  9. Hook up the power and A/v Cables.
  10. REmove the little white disc from the Cd tray lid.
  11. Place a Disc on the spindle, and cap the disc with the little white piece that you removed from the CD tray cover.
  12. Boot up the PS2 and test it, Continue cleaning until you get it to work.
  13. Put it back together, and your in business.

SOURCE: PS2 reads ps1 games but not ps2. Clicking noise

Hi Jstpd,

Boot up your PS2 with no disc in it. Press the Traingle and highlight the top selection. Press the triangle again and then press X then select ON and press X. This should turn on Diagnostics. Do not reboot the PS2, just put a PS2 disc in. This might get it reading PS2 discs again.
If this does work you can follow the procedure for cleaning below:

SOURCE: my ps3 used to be backwards compatible for ps1-ps2

is it the 60 gb model?? that is the only one that did backwards compatibility. all others dont. if u do have the old 60gb then maybe sony got rid of it on the firmware updates. go on the ps3 website and update an older firmware and see if that works.

Fully backwards compatible ps3 shuts down with 3 beeps and flashing red light when trying to play ps1 games

Hmmmnnn, consider the reason they pulled the rev compatible system off the market. It is possible to be getting the symptoms of YLOD without it actually happening with some games. The older games spun faster(sometimes) and made the system work harder. It could be heating up and shutting down right at the point of failure. I've seen 2 different revers compatible systems YLOD the same way. Good luck.

I thought playstations are all formated to play any made of equal or lesser p.s. value such as p.s.3. should play p.s.2. games

I believe you're asking about backwards compatibility. While I agree a PS3 should be able to play PS2 games, it's sadly not always the case. While they all can play PS1 games, not every PS3 can play PS2 games. PS2 compatibility depends on the model.

Backwards compatibility with PS2 games has slowly been phased out. The original PS3's had hardware emulation (quite literally there is a PS2 inside of your PS3). The later revisions had software emulation only (PS3 processor pretends to be the PS2 processor), and then none at all. No slim PS3 has backwards compatibility.

Hardware emulation:
20 GB PS3 Fat/Original - Model CECHB01
60 GB PS3 Fat/Original - Model CECHA01

Software emulation:
80 GB PS3 Fat/Original - Model CECHE01

In my personal experience, there's no real difference between software and hardware emulation in terms of actual game play. Software emulation has a few hang-ups on some older games, but overall it works pretty well. And it's infinitely better than not having any ability to play PS2 games at all.

Can ps2 games be played on a ps3 and if yes how

Hi, the only ps3 that can play ps2 games is the 40gig one this is the only one they made that was backwards compatible you could also play ps1 games on this ps3, how ever they are hard to come by now and the only real place you can get one from is the well know auction site.
The other thing you could try would be to go into your nearest game shop and ask them if they can get a backwards compatible ps3 they are out their but are hard to come buy new.

their is also ways of changing the firmware on your ps3 to accept the old games how ever doing this is illegal and i cant give you any advice on this as its banned by the site, how ever if you use google and type in how do i make my ps3 backwards compatible this will then list loads of sites that can offer the help your looking for

Unfortunately, no. Sony built the PS3 to only play PS3 games, so no backwards compatibility. Maybe in the future though, they might release an update.

Can PS2 games be played on a PS3?

It depends on what PS3 you get. The PS3 slim does not offer backward-compatability to PS2 games. You can play PS1 titles.
Here is a link to a page that goes more into detail about what to buy. There is also a link on the page that will show you what games can be played on what PS3. http://thirdworldgeek.com/is-your-ps3-backward-compatible/

The second link I talked about is the picture of Megan Fox(He's telling the truth, it's not a porn site, he just likes Megan Fox.
