I am connected via network cable to an ADSL router on BE Internet. All the other computers have no problems both wired & wireless

Hi there, still no joy :(

  • Caroline Clifford Jul 26, 2009

Well here's something, my wireless connection has miraculously started working! I think that will do me for now as my mate would never use ethernet anyway - thanks all!

You need to check the drivers in device manager
You can Go to start<Run and in the open box type devmgmt.msc and than click on Okay it will open Device manager for you and check if the drivers are there or not.

If it says Limited or no connectivity than you must be getting an IP address in the range of 169.254.....

You can go to command prompt and perform ipconfig to know the ip address, and if you are getting the ipaddress in this Range than it happens due to three reasons.

    1. A security software
    2. Corrupted Lan drivers
    3. A corruption in the Winsock file or TCP/ Ip netwrok stags

First of all let me know, How are you connected to the internet

Like Who is you internet service provider?, Are you using a modem, a modem *** router or a modem and router?

Than i will let you know the further steps to fix this.

Did you perform ipconfig and were you getting the ipaddress in the range of 169.254......

    If yes

    1. Than ther very first steps should be the power flee of your Modem and router

Whic means, Turn off all your computers, than Unplug all the cables from your modem *** router and keep it off for 30 seconds and than restart your modem and once all the light would be on on the modem than turn your computer on and see if you are able to go online or not

    If not than

    2. you can boot your system in safe mode with networking and check

For this, The moment you press power button to restart your system keep tapping F8 key on your keyboard which will give you the access to Advanced boot menu and there you need to select safe mode with networking and see if you could go online there or not?

Perform these two steps, for next steps i will let you knwo what to do.

Well you didn't tell me in details if you performed ipconfig or not? if yes than what is the Ip adress?

If you had the same ipaddress in the range of 169.254.....

Than let me know if you have installed any security software on your system and how did you reinstall windows, Did you perform system recovery to reinstall windows or you reinstalled it from discs?

If you have reinstalled any kind of security software as well than uninstall it first and than try

    and

You can also uninstall and reinstall the drivers for your LAN card and check.

This the common catch 22 that happens when you install XP and it does not have the network drivers for the laptop you are working with on the disc. The fix is to go on the internet and download the drivers for your device, but wait... you can't get on the internet!

You will need a 2nd computer and a thumb drive/blank CD to resolve this. On the 2nd computer go to IBM's site to download your drivers here:
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-55042.html

Download the network drivers to your thumb drive/CDR then install them on the R50e. In the future you should always keep a thumb drive or a burnt cd of your network drivers handy BEFORE an OS reinstall. Once you have the network drivers installed you can fix pretty much anything else that needs drivers. Also, be sure to run windows update and get all the patches for XP. It will take a long time, but it is VERY important.

Ok, if the drivers are installed and seem to be working then you may have a networking issue. Start with the wired connection only as that is easier to troubleshoot than the wireless at the moment. The limited connectivity error is normally caused by not being able to obtain an IP address on the device and sometimes from not being able to obtain a DNS server address. If we are talking about a wireless connection this error also happens when you have an issue with the wireless security settings on your laptop or WAP.

    1. Plug a known good network cable into your network port and confirm that you have a status LED light lit on your laptop.
    2. From the Start Menu select RUN and type in CMD then hit enter. This will open up a black screen where we can type commands to get more information.
    3. Type "ipconfig /all" (without the quotes) and press enter. This will return a screen full of info about your network interfaces. Post the results of that command and I can get a much better picture of what you are dealing with.

    ***Things you can type yourself***

While still in that screen type "ipconfig" and press enter. Note your ip address and gateway addresses. If your IP address is 169.x.x.x then 99% of the time the issue is your network card not getting an IP address from your router via DHCP. If your ip address is 192.x.x.x or something other than 169.x.x.x type this command. "ping IP-ADDRESS" and hit enter, replace IP-ADDRESS with your default gateway's ip address which could look something like 192.168.0.1 and let see if it times out or replies to your ping.

You could also attempt to grab a fresh ip address from your router with the following steps.

    1. Power cycle your router. While not required normally it will not hurt anything.
    2. In the black CMD window type "ipconfig /release all" and press enter. This may take a few moments to complete. After that command has finished it should return back your ipconfig info with a bunch of 0.0.0.0 addresses.
    3. Type "ipconfig /renew all" and wait for it to finish. Be sure to include any errors or the IP address that it displays after the command finishes. If your ip address looks something like 192.168.0.100 and your gateway looks like 192.168.0.1 you might have resolved the issue :)

If you need to reset it, you can get a recovery disk from IBM Lenovo which will be much cheaper than getting a new copy of Windows. When you call up IBM, make sure you keep your serial no handy.

I have downloaded lan driver for model ibm thinkpad R50e model from internet but cann't install

On Lenovo (IBM) website there are dropdown with 3 types for the R50e i.e 1834, 1842 and 2670 meaning once one of the 3 is chosen , you will be able to choose the Model and then the Operating System....have you done that so that you get the right d'load?

Alterantively you may be having problems installing it due to an anti-virus program or not having the right application/program to run open the driver package, in what ever extension it is in, i.e .exe, .rar, .zip

Anyway I hope you got it from this page below, you just have to choose the OS and whether Wireless or Wired Lan Driver

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?doccategoryind=50655&template=%2Fproductpage%2Flandingpages%2FproductPageLandingPage.vm&brandind=10&familyind=168403&machineind=0&modelind=0&partnumberind=0&subcategoryind=0&operatingsystemind=49979&validate=true

Happy hunting
