I put in the cd and it will not load. It keeps going to the same error message. I changed the bios and listed load from cd as #1 but it won't. I tapped f8 and still nothing. If there is no other way I will just reinstall using the automatic recovery feature and then save everything to an external drive in case this should ever happen again.

CD in drive still getting message
    corrupt/system32/config/system

Try this while in the Recovery Console meaning at start up... but if it does not say boot from cd press F8 as soon as the computer starts booting. Also might have to change your bios settings to make it read the cd-rom first

This should not delete any infomation The A is usually the recovery console so don't setup XP that will reformat the drive unless all else fails...

1. Insert and boot from your Windows XP CD.
2. After the CD is loaded yoou will receive the following on screen:

A. To setup Windows XP, press Enter.
B. To repair Windows XP installation using recovery console, press R.

3. Choose the option, "To repair the Windows XP installation using recovery console", press R.

4. Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.

5. If an Administrator Password have been established, you will be prompted to type it in. If no Administrator Password exists, just press ENTER.
6. At the prompt type the following and press Enter after each line:

cd C:\windows\system32\config
ren system system.bad

Here's part of an article on how to replace that registry file:

Look in the C:\windows\system32\config\regback\ folder.
There should be copies of the registry files stored inside that folder.
They are backed up periodically and stored in that folder.

If you create a MiniWin, BartPE, or a Linux Live CD, you can start the computer from CD and move the file system to the required folder, C:\windows\system32\config\.

Well this means one of important files needed to start Windows is corrupted (it's a registry file).
I'd recommend repairing Windows installation. If you have Windows XP and also the Original Windows CD follow: this guide.

My notebook says WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM FILES ARE CORRUPED OR MISSING

Time to run CHKDSK/F if you can or restore your OS. It has been caused by a registry error and there are a number of ways that can happen, from removing power before shut dow to, if Win7/Vista, trying to hack a way in without a password.

it is nothing but windows registry error. do one thing in another pc download the Hiren's boot cd from internet, write that file in a cd, try to boot from that cd & repair the registry. otherwise just format the operating system & reload the OS.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

That means the System Registry Hive has become corrupted.

There are two ways to get back up and running. The easy way which doesn't always work, and then there is the hard way.

Easy Way --- Note that this doesn't always work.
When you are booting your system, press the F8 key during the start of the bootup sequence, meaning after it does the Power On Self Test.

Once you press the F8 key, you will be taken to a Menu. Select "Boot Using Last Known Good Configuration".

It will now attempt to load Windows XP using a past set of configuration files.

If that doesn't work, there is the next step....the hard way.

Hard Way
Boot your system with the Windows XP Install CD, let the system boot into the Setup. Once in the Setup, choose to run the Recovery Console2.gif.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to good old DOS.

First, we will recover the System Hive.

Now, type in the following commands with pressing Enter after each line.

md tmp
copy C:\windows\system32\config\system C:\windows\tmp\system.bak
delete C:\windows\system32\config\system
copy C:\windows\repair\system C:\windows\system32\config\system

Be very careful when you are typing in these commands, one wrong move, and you have, broken Windows XP.

Also, change the C in the commands to whatever your Windows XP drive letter is.

Attempt to boot the system, if it doesn't boot, get back into the Recovery Console and do the following commands.

md tmp
copy C:\windows\system32\config\software C:\windows\tmp\software.bak
delete C:\windows\system32\config\software
copy C:\windows\repair\software C:\windows\system32\config\software

Hi

files in system32\config\ are missing or corrupt.
there is a back up stored by default at c:\windows\repair
you can copy the contents of windows\repair folder into system32\config\ and it should solve the problem, you can do it with the windows installation cd by using the recovery console.

Go into the repair folder enter the following commands in repair console

cd windows (press enter)
cd repair (press enter)
copy *.* c:\windows\system32\config\ (press enter)

files should be copied

type exit, quit or restart or reboot to restart the computer.
