Question about Televison & Video

1 Answer

I have an Admiral GOJ12311 TV with built-in VCR. I recently hooked up an Emerson DVD player to the TV set. The DVD works great through the set. However, when I turn off the DVD to return to cable programming I can't get the TV signal back on the Admiral. The only way I can get the TV signal back is to unplug the DVD player from the set. This is not handy. Is there a setting in the Admiral to handle this?

I turn the DVD player off when I want to watch cable TV.
The cable runs from the cable company's line into their cable box. Then another cable runs from the box into the back of the TV, into the only opening capable of accepting that kind of cable.
I have the DVD connected to the TV at the bottom two ports on the back. A guy from the cable company tried to fix this problem and checked everything and he couldn't make the cable signal come on when the DVD cables are plugged in. He said it's like the DVD being connected to the TV--even when the TV is off--"overwhelms everything. I'm pretty sure it shouldn't be this way. I saw a post from one guy wanting to sell the same kind of TV I have and he said he had a DVD player connected to it. Also, on the set-up sheet from Admiral there is shown a camcorder hooked up to these same two ports, so the set must accommodate this sort of auxiliary equipment.

Your idea about a separate power switch for the power to the DVD player doesn't work. It seems like the very fact that the video and audio cables of the DVD player are plugged in to the TV is enough to make the TV not work, even when the power to the player is off. I understand it could still be drawing a tiny bit of current, but we tried with the separate switch cutting off even that possible tiny bit and the TV still won't give me cable programming. But as soon as I disconnect those audio and video cables from the DVD the regular TV picture comes on. And I see no switch or setting on the TV for AUX or anything like that. Do you have any other ideas? I tried disconnecting the cables as they emerge from the DVD rather than disconnecting them from the TV. It didn't help. The TV doesn't like those cables stuck in it and it won't give me regular cable signals. I admit it's a cheap DVD player--$35 at Walmart. But that shouldn't be a factor.

Do you actually turn the DVD player off, or do you just stop playing a DVD?
The cable programming goes directly to the tv or does it run through something else, and then into the tv? Also, what inputs do you have the DVD player and the cable running into. Thanks

Can you connect the DVD through other inputs on this tv? I have never heard of any setting in this tv that would cause what you are describing, most likely the tv just continually sees a signal from the dvd player and so always believes the dvd player is on so I would think it is the DVD player's fault. A simple fix would be to buy a power strip that has a remote such as an outdoor lighting unit so that you can turn off the power to the dvd player so no signal is going to the tv rather than unplugging it everytime.

I'm sorry to say, but there is no other setting on the tv. I don't know why it is favoring the dvd player even with the power off. I would buy a different dvd player and see if it does the same thing, and then return it or keep it if it ends up working and return the other one to walmart. The fact is that I have never heard of this problem as nothing should make the tv want to do this.

My DVD player is, quite literally, on the blink...

Hi Your problem is Copy protection on your DVD's! Without going into techno-bable, your DVD player detects that you are connected to a VCR, (You have no choice in your case as it is built-in), there are methods such as "Copyguard" and "Macrovision" that try to stop you from copying your favorite DVD onto VHS. The audio is left alone, but the video will go bright and dim, and the colors will be messed up, making the result un-watchable. You will find that the cheap DVD's you get for a couple of bucks at the discount store will play fine, as it would be too expensive to protect them. There are "little black boxes" available as "video stabilizers" that will cure this problem, (but you didn't hear that from me!),otherwise you must connect into a t.v. without a built-in VCR. P.S. Make sure the t.v. you switch to has RCA type A/V inputs on it, as you will have to purchase a separate RF modulator otherwise. Good Luck!
