I like to know how I can get my new 86 El-Camino wiper switch on steering column to work on a 79 EL-Camino, is the color code different in the years for the wiper motor. IF so what. Match the colors and doesn't work well.

No! The books does not show which color code wiring or to which wire is the hi or lo speed on the wiper and so forth

Hi....
I dont have one but you can pick up a Haynes manual on it at like Auto Zone and it has wiring diagrams in the back. Shows color codes on wires and where they run.
Hope this helps
Thanks

I put a new wiper motor on a 79 el camino and it works but it dont move the wipers it just turns and i got the 2 nuts tite on the wiper transmission

Check to make sure that the "Knurled" segments on the tapered points that hold the wiper arms to the motor actuators are not worn smooth as this is what gives the actual grip required for the wiper movement. If they are worn smooth then no amount of tightening will help.

I have 79 El Camino. Horn blows randomly while driving down the street. How do disconnect ot

You can unplug the horn/s. You could pull the horn fuse, pull the horn relay. Of course that isn't the proper fix, you may need the horn. The problem is usually the wiring in the steering column. I can't be positive, at the moment.

Need to open up the steering column on 1983 El Camino for igniti

Saw, It sounds like the accuator rod from the ignition lock cylinder to the ignition switch is broken or disconnected.
If you look near the base of the steering column you wll see the ignition switch mounted to the steering column. As you turn the key you should see the rod move up and down, if not, you will have to disassemble to figure out why.
Good luck, let me know what you find.

Ignition Switch grey_line.gif Inspect | Test | Replace The ignition switch is usually mounted to the steering column and is operated by a linkage rod.
NOTE On column-mounted ignition switches, don't confuse the switch with the lock cylinder and keys. The ignition switch is not normally visible.
On some vehicles, the steering column support has to be removed and the column lowered to find the ignition switch. On others, the switch is accessible under the dash.

  • Unbolt it from its position.
  • Bolt the new switch into position.
