Question about Maytag Neptune FAV6800AW Top Load Washer

Neptune Washer with lid signal "od"

I would like to thank everyone in the discussion on lid lock problems with either "od" or "OP" signals of their machine that prevents the use of their Neptune washer model FAV6800 models. The left lock latch under the top portion (not the lid). I used a flat headed screw driver to pop the top portion. The left side locking latch is simply not sealed. Water or moisture or humidity easily oxyidize or corrode the terminal connections inside the white plastic holding box container. I simply used some lightly graded sandpaper to gently sand away the damaged or corroded terminals and used WD-40 after sanding. Take care that you reassemble the latch connector assembly insuring that the actual latches are in the unlocked position. Additionally, you may want to apply a little pressure on the lid in its down position to insure that when you turn on the washer to a cleaning cycle that there is properly clearance for the gray plastic latches engage to their locked position when you hit the "start" button. Cleaning the left latch is a MUST over the life time of your machine. Until Maytag can offer some kind of solution to its corrision problems with these locking latches, users will face "od" or "OP" errors on their display with this washer.

    Can't add a comment so just passing along this, this not a clarification request. Thank you oak9952, great info! Here is pic of what you probably experienced. Some folks have had issues with the leads on the magnetic reed relay in that left lid lock, the corrosion issue in full force. Just trip back the wire a bit and re-solder and you can be back in business. Pic of the corrision issue; very poor design as oak9952 stated and has caused many folks unnecessary grief and expense. Just to let everyone know the right lid lock can fail and it's not necessary to replace. The left lid lock with its dual function of lid open/closed signal and lid lock signal to the control board is the important one. Lead on mag switch broken do to corrision issue;

You have lost signaling from the Left Hand Lid lock.

The OD code is sent out from the Console main control board when a lid open is not sensed via the signaling from the Left Hand Lid lock for three completed wash cycles.

Display shows OP but unable to clear , checked out switch, 1 contact pin was heavily corroded. I polished it up but made no difference

If you place a magnet over the left hand grey bumper will this clear the OP error code with the washer lid up? If so you have a lid magnet out of position.
See page 35 of the FAV6800A/FAV9800A Service Manual for the location.

Did you remove the left hand lid lock cover and inspect the connections on the magnetic reed relay?

Check to see if the leads on the magnetic reed relay are connected. This pic shows the black lead broken from one end of the magnetic reed relay. This will produce loss of signaling to the Control Board and generate an OP error code.

MY MAYTAG NEPTUNE MODEL FAV6800AWQ KEEPS DISPLAYING THE LETTERS OP

You have lost signaling thru the Left Hand lid Lock. The washer has not see the lid go closed thru the signaling with the magnetic reed relay in the Left Hand Lid Lock.

You could have a Lid Magnet out of position or severe corrosion. You can place a large magnet over the Left bumper like this and see if the OP error code clears;

See this post for troubleshooting the OP error code Left Hand Lid Lock Troubleshooting I go over OD error code troubleshooting but you troubleshoot the issue the same way for the OP error code.

If the Lid Magnet is not out of position you may have an open circuit thru the Magnetic Reed Relay as shown in the Pics of this link Left Hand Lid Lock Troubleshooting.

Why does it say "op" when i press the start button?

The Service Manual for reference. Sears Parts Direct for reference.

I feel you have lost signaling from the Left Hand Lid Lock for Lid is Open/ Lid is Closed.

First check is to place a magnet over the Left Hand grey bumper and while watching the LED display see if the OP error code clears. If it does you have a lid magnet out of position. See the Service Manual for access to the Lid Magnet.

See Pic;

ba0e933.jpg
If an external magnet over the Left Hand grey bumper doesn’t clear the OP error code with the lid open then See this Link for troubleshooting Left Hand Lid Lock Troubleshooting. I discuss the OD error code but the OP error code troubleshooting is very similar. If the lid Magnet is not out of position then I feel you have a broken lead at the Magnetic Reed relay or severe corrosion issues with the Left Hand Lid Lock preventing Lid Open/Lid Closed status signaling to the Control Board in the Console.

Maytag neptune tl washer lock not working my husband bought it used so I have no manuals I was able to run a load blaech water to clean it but now it just keeps flashing "od" I've left it...

If you are still having issues; The OD alarm is signaled by the control board when it has not see a lid open signal from the left lid lock for three completed wash cycles. Issue could be a lid magnet out of position or corrosion issues with the left lid lock and or plug connecting to the left lid lock. Take a look at his post. It’s for OP alarm issues associated with the left lid lock but it will give you a start point for troubleshooting. Post back if you have questions. Links for the the SM and parts for the Left Hand Lid Lock replacement info are in that post.

Will not start up and show code 0d

Hello kc59mail ,

For the FAV6800A the od alarm means the Control Board has not seen a lid open condition for three complete wash cycles. I suspect the left lid lock.

I think you have a problem with the magnetic reed relay in the left lid lock. If you could try this? I want to make sure you signal an “OP” alarm to the display. Can you select Spin Only cycle with the lid open press start. Do you signal the “OP” alarm lid open to the display? If it does close the lid and the “OP” alarm should clear does it? I’m checking that the lid magnet is in place and the signaling connections are working thru the left lid lock back to the control board.

Let us know what you fin and we will go from there. You could try powering down the machine by removing the 120VAC power cord from you wall receptacle. That may give you three more wash cycles before the od alarm is triggered again.
