Hi there:
This its a generic instructions about how to work...
1.- Locate the timing marks and the metal timing pointer located on the lower engine pulley. It might be necessary to turn the pulley with a wrench until the marks appear.
2.- Refer to the engine's specifications manual to determine what the correct timing mark is, and mark the proper timing mark on the pulley with a piece of chalk.
3.- Attach the timing light to the engine. The timing light has three cords that extend from the bottom of the light. Two of the cords have colored alligator clips on the end, while the third cord looks like a rectangle with a hole in the middle. Clip the red alligator clip to the positive side of the battery, which can be identified by the "+" sign. Clip the black alligator clip to a clean metal surface. The black clip acts as an electrical ground. Clip the cord that looks like a rectangle around the spark plug wire for the number one cylinder. Refer to the engine's manual to determine which wire is for the number one cylinder.
4.- Disconnect and plug any vacuum lines that are attached to the distributor. A vacuum line can be plugged with the tip of a pencil or golf tee.
5.- Ensure that the timing light's cords are free from the engine's fan, then start the engine.
6.- Point the timing light at the chalk mark on the lower engine pulley and the metal timing pointer, then pull the trigger on the timing light. The timing light will produce a strobe effect. The engine will be properly timed if the chalk mark and the metal timing pointer align with each other.
7.- Adjust the timing, if necessary, by loosening the single bolt that holds the distributor in place and twisting the distributor slightly until the chalk mark and the metal timing pointer are in alignment, then tighten the distributor's bolt and reconnect the distributor's vacuum line.
