I kept getting the same aac firmware message until I followed the following steps:
I downloaded the firmware upgrade from http://voxrightnow.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2243/related/1, and followed all the troubleshooting instructions that popup when you start the program:

start the program,
remove the battery,
hold the play button while plugging into usb,
release the play button when the the term "initializing" replaces "searching",
click the start button to replace the firmware.

If your computer recognizes your pearl, then backup your music first and check the "format data" box. I couldn't play aac files without formatting while upgrading the firmware.

How to Create AAC Version in iTunes 12.7?

If you are a Windows user, there is indeed no Create AAC Version any more. But if you try on a Mac computer, you can still make AAC version in iTunes 12.7. You can make it with steps:
1. Open iTunes on your Mac computer.
2. Under the Library, select Songs. Then, tick a song.
3. Click File > Convert > Create AAC Version.
iTunes will convert your music into a new song in m4a format. After the process finished, you'll see there are two different formats of the same song in iTunes. On the display of iTunes, the second one is the AAC version you created; you can click Show in Finder to check it.

If you want to create AAC version to convert music to m4a format, and sync it to your iPhone 8 as ringtone, I'm sorry to tell you that you can't make it any more because there is no Tones icon in iTunes 12.7. You can create AAC version, but you cannot sync ringtones.
If you still want to sync ringtone to iPhone, you can refer to this guide, it will show you the detailed steps pf creating AAC version with pictures. And also introduce you an easy and direct way to transfer music to iPhone 8 as ringtone without creating AAC version:

Thomson 6717 2gb mp3 player will not play songs loaded onto it it tells me i need AAC upgrade firmware at www.rcaaudiovideo.com and there is no AAC download listed at that website

Firstly, is the Thomson 6717 the same as the RCA Pearl TH1602 ie are they made by the one company under different names for marketing in different countries. If so, go to the following site for a choice of three firmware downloads. Please advise if this works on your Thomson 6717.

It needs aac upgrade

My RCA Pearl gave me the AAC firmware message with some files until I followed all the troubleshooting instructions that popup when running the firmware update software. The firmware with AAC upgrade is here.

Follow these instructions and it will work:

run the firmware update software software,
reset the player by removing the battery or holding the power button for 10s for players with internal batteries,
hold the play button while inserting the unit into usb,
release the button once the software changes from "searching" to "initalizing",
check the box to format the data on the player,
and click start.

When I did this update without formatting, the aac fix did not work. I

Need aac upgrade firmware for rca mp3 th1611-a same problem....can't return them, can't fix them....my 2 children are VERY dissapointed as this was their ONLY gift from Santa this year. If anyone can...

There is no AAC firmware upgrade. These players are not compatible with AAC (iTunes) format. Most non-iPod players are incompatible, but there are a few exceptions here and there. The box on the player has to list AAC, and it can't have a proviso attached to the AAC, such as "non-protected" AAC. The cashiers at the places that sell them don't know jack about compatibility, usually.

My creative zen keeps telling me playback error so i can't listen to music. ive reset it a million times

either the songs are in the wrong format, or you have a corrupt DB.

Get firmware upgrade or recovery mode instructions from Creative's website.

If you are trying to download iTunes songs - dont!
The format of the songs are wrong in one way or another. Each Mp3 player has a product spec sheet that lists which type of music file it is compatible with (Mp3, WMA, WAV, AAC, etc). You can't play iTunes songs, which are AAC format, on a player that only accepts Mp3 or WMA format.

The second formatting issue has to do with the DRM license on the songs you have downloaded. Right click a song that gave you an error, click on "Properties," and click on the "License," "Media Usage Rights," or "Digital Rights Mgmt" tab (wording varies by configuration). Not every song allows unlimited or even one-time transfer to a "portable device" (code word for "Mp3 player" in this case). Also, some songs are fixed-term - they expire after a while - sometimes in as little as 24 hours.

To get around this, convert every song to Mp3 format. Either that, or upgrade your music service subscription to the highest pkg they have available and never cancel (Napster's basic music svc, for instance, does not let you transfer to an Mp3 player, but their "Napster To Go" upgrade does allow transfer).
