Question about HP Pavilion a1520n PC Desktop

1 Answer

My DVD/CD+RW will not recognize CD or DVD (Lite-On DVDRW SHW-H65)

First my problems started when it would not recognize a DVD. The light on front of PC would come on and it would just make a grinding noise but would not play. CD's were slow to come up but eventually they would be reconized. Now it will not pick up & play either one. The light still comes on and flashes on the front but won't play.

I have checked the region & that is set right. I looked in device manager & it says device is working properly. I tried to update driver but it says my drivers are current.

I don't think that the DVD part of this pc ever worked. I burned the backup when I first purchased & it let me do that, but it has never seemed right. I also ran a test with a series of CD's DVD's but I didn't have all the different CD/DVD the test required.

Thank you in advance for any help!

It sound like your DVD/CD+RW has a problem with the read/write head. So u can use some cleaning liquid to clean the head. After cleaning hope it will work on CD. Most of the time DVD are not played or read properly when you eject the disk while in use.

You will have to open the unit. To be honest, it's a good idea to buy a new one as I had to change to belt and my drive started smoking when I turned my computer on.

Light_On dvdrw SHW-160p6s working properly but doesn't read anyth

Hi,

Thanks for coming to FixYa, The problem you have is either a well documented software problem or a failing drive.

Click the below link, then scroll down and click the "Fix It" button. Follow the onscreen instructions, restart when it's done and see if your drive re-appears. If it does, you're done, if it doesn't work then your drive is most likely failed and you should replace it.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Hi PhxROcker,

In these drives there are two lasers and two pick-up sensors. Normally in a combined head. One set is used for the DVD and the other is used for the CD. From you description it sounds like the optical sensor for the CD laser has expired! When you place a CD into the drive a small amount of information is read by the drive that identifies the disc type, manufacturer, it's status, capacity etc. If the drive cannot read this then it thinks nothing is present.

If you insert a disc does the LED on the front the the unit flash a few times while it spins the disc. Does it do this repeatedly? If it fails to read the disc does the LED stop blinking and the drive no longer spins the disc? If this is the case then your drive may indeed be faulty.

Sorry I could not be of any further assistance.

Regards,

Spare head 2.

Lite-on DVDRW SHW-160p65 DVD-RW drive

Where are you looking to recognize the disks? if it is in my computer in Windows it would most likely be because the Roxio software was what was recognizing the disks. generally Windows does not do a very good job of recognizing blank disks. I would look at the disk information in your current CD burning software and see what that says.
