Here is a link to specs for that year model of truck, I would need more info such as auto/manual, and 4x4 or not. Anyway it's an easy chart to read. But technically speaking a 1/2 ton pickup is only rated to carry 1,000 lbs in the bed. In general, yes. This is a carb tuning issue. Another possibility is a vacuum leak somewhere, but most likely, it's a carb issue. You'll typically see your rpm drop a bit when you put it in gear, but that it sometimes stalls out points to a carb issue.
