I have a 1997 Monte Carlo. Suddenly it wouldn't start, the engine will not even turn over. The battery is good; I took the starter off and had it tested twice and it passed.
I changed the key barrel in the steering column with no results. The security light on the instrument panel is flashing but don't know what to do to address it.

starter might be internally shorted or binding up causing the starter to require more amperage to turn. have a mechanic perform a starter draw test on it or take it off and have it tested. if you are going to have it tested take it to a good alternator/starter repair shop. autozone and oreillys cant simulate engine load and if its binding because of a bad bearing on the armature shaft, with out engine load it will test good
I have a 1996 monte carlo in my shop, and the costomer lose the key with the chip ,the dealership has to cut and reprogram a key. the alarm can not be bypassed. the LOC you see is for the radio, and you need a code to unlook it.Did you change the starter and battery because it would not start. if a car cranks but not start that is not a start or battery. there is 3 things a car needs to start gas ,air and spark. do you know if you have any of them
Ifit turns the engine so the bendex drive gear engages with the fly wheel then the starter is bad its nit switching inside it and you just by passed the bad switch. If the bendex drive dosn't engage then the solinoid is the cause of the problem
Most likely it is a Starter Solenoid or ignition switch if starter turns but motor does not crank the bendix may not be kicking in on the starter even if it is turning also check flywheel for broken teeth.....Good Luck
You can reset the computer by disconnecting the battery terminals from the battery and touching them together for 60 seconds. This probably won't fix your problem.
Is the 'weird noise' the normal noise you hear when you crank a car over? If so, that's the starter. If you don't hear it, you have a starter issue. You may want to try holding the brake, turning the key on to the first click, pulling the shifter into neutral, and trying. Sometimes this works and indicates a failing park/neutral switch. If not that, put car back into park. Have someone gently tap the starter with a hammer while you crank the engine. Sometimes this will jar a dead starter into motion. In that case, change the starter.
Hi, Check and make sure the starter relay is not sticking. If it is not, then the bendix in the starter is probably bad or not shimmed properly. You can check the starter when you remove it, be careful of the torque. Good Luck to you. Hope this Fixsya!
