Problem Installing Windows 2000.

Hi I have a DELL OPTIPLEX 170 L. I am trying to install windows 2000 but after it copy's over the files and restarts the screen is just blank after the BIOS. I have went thought setup twice and the same thing happens I have also tried installing Windows XP Home it will boot to the disc, wipe the disc and copy over the files but once it restarts after the BIOS the screen just goes blank the same as the Windows 2000. Then I tried to install Linux Ubuntu 9.04 and after I had installed it I and restarted I worked well so the ubuntu works well but I am looking Windows 2000. I tried to Install 2000 again but the same thing happens.
Thanks.

If you want a clean install just format your XP drive. Then boot with your 2000 cd in the drive. Make sure it is bootable and your bios is set to boot from cd.

Hi, my dell optiplex gx 150 was infected by multiple viruses so i decided to re-install xp booting from cd. after copying all the files from the cd and the pc restarts, its failing to continue installation...

1.You have a corrupted boot sector on your hard drive.
2.you will need to format the drive and then re-install the Operating System.
3. If you are not able to do this then a new hard drive is needed.
4. install a anti virus program after installing the operating system

I tried to install windows in my DELL optiples sx270 but i keep getting an error E61 Media Test Failure and unable to install windows

It indicates a bad hard drive, if you have repeatedly tried to install windows and it is coming up E61 Media Test Failure probably means there are bad sectors on the hardware.

How to forat the hard drive

Good day sir, hi, lets review first some of the reasons why windows xp cannot be installed on your PC, here are the possibilities :
  1. Your Windows XP CD is scratched beyoned readable. You will get prompts for missing files or files that can't be read on the CD. Get a good copy of windows XP.
  2. A memory module (ram) or some are defective, you get the blue screen with all sorts of warnings and data you can't understand and numbers you don't know. Check your ram modules. To be sure have it tested on another PC. If bad, replace it.
  3. Your memory should be aleast 128 mb or more for windows XP to install properly.
  4. Your CD/DVD drive is bad or selective of the CDs it reads, you may need to check the drive.
  5. your hard drive is bad, or has to much bad sectors near the boot area, where windows install its system and boot files, you have no choice but to replace it with a new one, or else you cannot format the old one no matter how.
Thats it, if I miss something, let me know, send me error messages to diagnose it properly.

CANT GET WINDOWS XP PRO TO COPY FILES TO A GX280

The problem is the driver for the sata hard drive. You would need to get that from the dell site and put it on a floppy disk, then at the start of the windows install select to install that driver. I ended up just installing the rc version of windows 7 and it worked out fine.

From the research I've done, it sounds like an issue with a (possibly corrupt) file in the video driver. Most people are recommending another video card be installed temporarily, to complete the windows installation. After that, you can uninstall the original video driver, shut down, then restart to have Windows reinstall the original video again.
