Was this a restart after an update? sometimes it takes quite a while. if not boot from CD/DVD and repair permission on the drive from the utilities folder. It is the biggest issue with startups.

How to reboot a colored apple imac computer

A normal restart only requires you to press the re-start button on the back of the CPU or on the front. You should hear the chime, the screen will come up and you will be taken to the Mac start-up screen (different OS will have different looking screens).
If the Imac has shut down suddenly or prematurely, you might not hear the chime but will see a grey screen with a status bar. Eventually you will see the normal Mac screen and your icons will slowly reappear.
If you do not get any start-up screen or any chime, unplug the unit, remove all peripherals ( such as USB cables etc) and leave it sit overnight. I have restored "dead" Macs by that simple technique.
If you see a screen but the Imac still won't boot, insert the restore disc, hold down the "C" key and restart from the disk. Or use disk warrior and start the same way. Disk Warrior will diagnose and repair problems with your OS.
If none of these strategies work, you may have internal component problems with your Imac that will require more expert repairs.

Startup screen has apple with spinning wheel then screen goes black

probably bad, might be disk, ram or logic board.

Try resetting pram and then try rebooting in safe mode by holding down letter s on start up. Try disk or drive select by holding down option key on start up. Make some effort, look up key commands on google and apple support.

MA878LL iMac 24" core 2 duo 2.4 do not turn on,

Checking the power supply isn't the easiest thing to do, it involves pulling apart the entire machine.
You can try resetting the SMC, unplugging all power, hold the power button for 5 seconds, replace power, then attempt to turn on.
if it still won't turn on, and assuming you didn't get AppleCare or it is expired (past 3 years) it might be worth taking in to an Authorized Apple Repair Facility and see if they will check it out for free. If it is under warranty, most definitely take it in or call 1-800-APL-CARE
If neither of those are an option, Power Supply http://www.ifixit.com/Apple-Parts/iMac-Intel-24-Inch-2-4-2-8-GHz-or-3-06-EMC-No-2211-GHz-Power-Supply/IF169-002
a tear down from iFixit for the 20" model, it is most likely very similar for your model as well http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Installing-iMac-Intel-20-Inch-EMC-2133-and-2210-Power-Supply/1006/1
Hopefully that helps. Good Luck

Computer won't start up correctly

Considering you have tried the Safe Boot mode to correct this, try to resolve this from the hardware side:

Procedure #1:

Here are some steps you can try to resolve the issue:

• First, hold in your power button for approximately 10 seconds to do a hard shutdown, if you have not already turned your Mac off.

• Once your Mac is shutdown, you will need to perform what is called a PRAM reset (Parameter RAM)

• Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously .

• Turn on the computer.
• Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.

• Now, hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the star tup sound for the third time.

• Release the keys and allow the Macbook to start up.
If the iMac still does not start up to your Desktop correctly, go on to the next procedure:
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Procedure # 2

-PMU RESET-

The Power Manager is an integrated circuit (computer chip) that is usually on the logic board of your Mac computer.

It is responsible for power management of the computer. It controls backlighting, hard disk spin down, sleep and wake, some charging aspects, trackpad control, and some input/output as it relates to the computer sleeping.

• If the computer is on, turn it off.
• Disconnect all the connections going into the Mac except for the Power cord.
• Once all connections have been disconnected, remove the power cord from the iMac.
• Wait 1 minute.
• Reconnect the keyboard, mouse and power cord back into the computer.
• Press the Power button to restart the iMac computer.

• Observe if it starts up to the main desktop this time.
If it does not however, you may have an issue with your current Mac OS X directory or the issue could be hardware related.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is a comprehensive reference for you regarding Additional Troubleshooting for Blue, Gray screen issues and more, that you can also review:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
If all else fails, you may need to visit your local Apple retail store Genius bar or local Apple-authorized service center in order to have your iMac at least diagnosed to find out what the core issue is.

Power up IMac but screen blank, fan on, light on but no response

I have one doing exactly this at the moment. It had gone to sleep and the fans were going like crazy. I think it is a Motherboard failure (it happened with many G5 iMacs), this one has been replaced once already, and I can't actually get it to install anything. I'm taking it apart tomorrow to see what I can find inside. If I fond anything I'll let you know.

My iMac G4 turns on and goes to the grey startup screen with the apple and loading circle, but stays there, and gets stuck, and after a few minutes shuts off on it's own.

You may have to reinstall you OS e.g. tiger, leopard with the disks that came with your computer. that should solve your problem
