I did a factory hard reset on my Samsung galaxy s6 and now I get either "couldn't sign in there was a problem communicating with google servers try again later" or stays on "checking info" for hours

This sounds like your wi-fi may need to be setup. If your phone was factory reset then you should have had to go through a Welcome setup which should have included wi-fi setup. If it didn't or you skipped or missed it, then do another reset and try again.
