SOURCE: Briggs & Stratton engine on Murray lawn mower

I always replace the air filter if its a paper element, and even if its a foam element I replace it rather than clean it. That said, engine stumbling is rarely and air flow problem - but it could be, so having a new filter assures no air restrictions.

I would drop the carbuerator bowl. On the bottom of the carb, near where the fuel line comes into the engine, should be a nut. Removing this nut allows the bowl to drop off the carb. Some engines the bowl screws off, you will have to look at the bowl. Often the bowl has sediment or sludge buildup inside. Cleaning the bottom of the bowl can prevent that sludge/sediment from plugging the intake tube. Even on newer mower models this is a common problem, the gas line tubing interior breaks down and the inside of the tubing can start degrading - ending up in the bowl as sludge.

After cleaning the bowl, I would add one ounce of fuel line cleaner to a full tank of fuel and run the entire tank of fuel. This will clean any deposits or "varnish" from the interior carb parts. Doing this and the first step will assure your carb is clean and functioning.

If that doesn't help, then I would look at the spacing between the magneto and coil assembly. If you want to do that I'd like you to write down all the model numbers and serial numbers on the engine nameplate, that way I can give you specific directions.

Hope this helps,
Gregg

defiantly the carb but its not bad - clean / soak it with some seafoam and blow out all the holes. its just clogged and isnt getting the fuel/air mixture right.

Take the carburator apart and clean it. Also, clean needle and seat. Please let me know if this helps.

SOURCE: Generator with Briggs & Stratton,no gas is getting in carburetor

The needle valve may be stuck which would not let gas into the carb. I don;t think rebuild kits are too expensive. Pull the carb and take it to a lawnmower repair shop and they should have the parts. Before that though pull the bowl and make sure it has gas in it. If no then remove the fuel line and make sure gas flows from it. If no then could be the fuel shutoff valve is not operating properly or junk in the gas tank is obstructing the line.

I have a Briggs & Stratton model 19E412 type 1131-E1 that will not start with starting fluid. It's getting spark to the plug, changed fuel filter and lines but will not start?

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved to a Briggs Generator category.

Engines only need 3 things to run.

Compression
A spark and the right time
Fuel

When you try and start, remove the plug and see if it is wet with gas? You may have a blocked carb jet.

Check compression.

Storm responder

if the piston rings have snapped. as they can do. it can lock the piston in place. and you will need to bore out a piston bore and put in a sleeve and new piston. worst possible thing is the crank has snapped. other possible is the generator motor has seized up making it so the engine will not move.

I have a Storm Responder generator that had it's engine cease after the last power outage. We had an oil leak fixed, but this didn't hold.

it sounds that the gasket was not put on properly and the engine leaked all the oil out of it causing it to lock up no lubrication.

Getting spark to plug will not start

Have at look at these engine starting tips. They apply to lawnmowers but are valid for generators also:

I have a Briggs and Stratton Elite series5500 watt portable generator. I cannot get it started. It has gas and oil but will not start. What could be the problem

Ensure choke is turned on while starting.
Ensure spark lead is fully pushed onto plug.
Remove spark plug and check there is a spark by keeping spark plug against body of engine and cranking engine, if no spark check there are no broken wires in ignition circuit.
Turn off gas tap if present. Remove the float bowl while holding a container under it to collect any gas. Turn on tap and check the fuel flows freely.
Check the air filter is clean. If it has foam elements these can be washed with warm water and detergent, rinsed and then oiled with a teaspoon of oil evenly distributed through the foam.

Briggs and stratton 11hp generator giving spark and new fuel pull start but just wont kick over any tips

how long has it been since it last ran? I had a similar problem with mine so I put clean fuel in it with a mixture of sea foam gas treatment. Used a shot of starting fluid to get started and let it run for an hour or so. Just started it again yesterday with no problems. The fuel in carburetor is most likely old and needs to be gotten out of. If you try this and get it started let it run in half choke position for a few minutes so old fuel will get out of caburetor. Good Luck

It started but when i pluged in ti it it quit. has not started since. checked plug and it was loaded with gas. install new plug and tried. check spark and it appears eratic. pulled air filter off and it is...

sounds like the float is stuck, how long has it ben setting around? try some carburetor cleaner. spray the carburetor down. empty the fuel tank put fresh fuel with fuel treatment. you may have to remove the spark plug, pull starter string a couple of times to clear out cylinder make sure spark plug is dry put back in and try to start the generator.
