My printer stopped working as soon as I inserted a new cartridge. I did make sure that it was the right one for the machine - hp 15 black. Now what happens is that the first of the three lights is blinking amber and the third light is a steady green. When I give a printer command nothing happens except that the printer section of the control panel tells me that the document is being printed.

You can follow the link. Yes you do have to install 2 carts. to work the printer. However from printer setting you may disable color print.
Note Ink cart head gets clogged when not used prolonged time.
Try running multiple "head cleanings" on it, or you might have the cartridge in the wrong location (if thats possible on that model). If not, then the interface board on the printhead may be faulty or the ribbon cable the sends the signal to the printhead assembly. Most of the InkJet printers made now days are considered disposable electronics by the manufactures. Due to the low price point and the lack of parts support or cost of labor to repair when they do stop working right. Good Luck
Hi there, You cannot install HP 940 Cartriges for Officejet Pro L7650 as they are not compatible and the mechanism is different for both the cartridges, In your printer, the HP 88 fits on the left bottom corner of the printer and the HP 940 cartridges are mounted on the Printhead inside the printer on HP Officejet 6500 AIO. Regards,Suhail
Please reboot your computer and the 940 too. Check the cable and connectors, are they tight? Make sure the screws are tight on the cable connectors and inspect the pins as it sounds like you use this printer on several computers?
You should reinstall the print drivers and if you have lost the CD you will find the software at the HP site on the left side of the page:http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF13a/18972-18972-236251-14438-236261-35985.html
If the cable is good and the software leaves you with the same problem then I must tell you that this printer is too old to repair. This printer was produced in 2000 and I am not sure about when they stopped making them. It was a great printer but it may be past its prime. You may have a failure in the 940. A new single function HP Printer can be purchased for half the price of trying to find someone to fix this printer. The new HP Printers are much more thrifty when it comes to ink than the 940 and they give much better color results too.
Sounds like the working cartridges are badly clogged. Is the new cartridge HP brand or an "internet special"? Try HP originals and see if the machine still works ( I imagine it will). If not, then yes the machine is probably and the end of its life.
This means that there is issue with the Ink Cartridges.
Please remove and re-insert the cartridges.
Check the expiration date on them. Also make sure that you are using genuine HP Cartridges, not refilled or Remanufactured.
If the issue still persists, please replace the ink cartridges.
i have an hp and find that they (color carts) cannot be refilled- the clever b*st*rds!! they stepped the ink reservoirs so, if you don't insert the re-fill needle 'just right', it bleeds into the others and you end up with a 'muddy' print-out! you need to buy a new hp cart, or shop around for a generic cart (cheaper) google your product & cart #. you may find a source for a cheaper cart. the black carts. can be re-filled! good luck!
Clean the contacts on the HP Cartridge. I've had the same error before and i switched it to a fresh new cartridge.. works fine ever since. THen i decided to switch back to the old cartridge, same error as you but i cleaned the contacts on the cartridge, works for a while but done after a week. Problem is that the ribbon circuit is rusted and the printer doesnt recognize the ink anymore.
Also make sure you both have the ink cartridges in place. Make sure it is seated properly inside.
