Question about GE Refrigerators

GE refrigerator GFE27GSDASS not cold enough, putting a fan behind the unit fixes this.

Greetings, I have a GE GFE27GSDASS refrigerator. It is a few years old not sure on the purchase date, but probably on the order of 3-4 years old. Recently, I noticed that freezer was not cold enough was set to -1 and it was at 18, per its own sensor. I pulled it away from the wall, opened the back. I didn't notice any significant amount of dust or dirt. I did notice that what I assumed to be the compressor left side bottom, behind the unit was hot but not so hot that I could not touch it. The problem seemed to go away after that for a month or two. Then it suddenly came back. Instead of pulling the unit out again and repeating the same thing, I simply took a fan about the size of a salad plate and had it blowing into the area behind the unit. This immediately fixed the issue within about 3 hours it was back at -1. I turned off the fan, and within about 2 hours the temperature had risen to 6 degrees. I turned it back on, and within about an hour or so it was back at -1. I have left it on since, and it has been running this way for about 3 days just fine. I assume there is a fan or some other cooling solution out somewhere, but can't find where this might be. Any ideas on what part I might need to replace? Thanks in advance

Right next to the compressor should have a fan called the condenser fan ,check to see if that is working .Sound like it's not also in front of the compressor should have a Finn type coil make sure that is clean of dust too

The repair technician I called out to check the freon levels quickly found this to be the cause and swapped it out. Thanks! I wish I would have seen this answer before I called the technician. I could have ordered the part online and installed it myself."

Hey Dcolpi,
This sounds like a unit that is low on freon.. Call around to the local appliance repair shops (tell them what your frig is doing and what they think the issue might be?)....and ask about putting freon in your frig... (sometimes the little mom and pop stores will work harder for your business)

Unfortunately, that wasn't the problem. It turned out to be the compressor fan. It was getting power, but was not working. That had to be replaced and once it was, seems to be working fine.

Greetings,
yes, sometimes these motors will make noise for years and other times, they go out pretty quick...so, to answer your question...it would be prudent to have it repaired.....Bruce Denton

Top of freezer is fine but the bottom isn't as

Sounds like your evaporator fan is not doing its job. The purpose of this fan is to move cold air from the evaporator coil (behind the lining of the unit) to the rest of the freezer and to the refrigerator.

The fan should be behind an access plate at the top of the freezer compartment. If it is running, you should be able to hear it. If you don't hear it, open the access plate and look at it. If the fan is not turning, you will need to replace the fan motor.

GE Monogram ZISB36DYB Freezer Not Cold Enough; Burning Center

Pull the refrig out , and remove the panel at the bottom , on the back . Behind this panel , will be the compressor and condenser " roll " coil , and the condenser fan motor . From your description of the problem , the fan motor in not operating , or the coils are extremely clogged with dust . If the fan motor is not operating , the most likely cause , is the main control board . You can try replacing the motor first , but , the board is most likely the cause . This is the electronic board , behind the 8 " X 10 " panel , behind the refrig also . If you remove the panel , and look at the board closely , You may see a burned part ( resistor ) . However , replacing the burnt part , will not solve the problem . The complete board will need to be replaced .

Upper section of refrig. not cooloing. Remainder

check to make sure the freezer fan is turning. This should be inside the freezer unit at the top. It is probably behind an access panel.

If this fan is not turning, not enough cold air will move to the refrigerator side to keep it cold enough. If the fan has died, it will have to be replaced.

I have a 2002 GE side by side the freezer works fine but the refrig side is not keeping cool enough.....Any help please.

your condensing fan in the unit may be out. This fan supplies the cold air from the freezer to the fridge. To find it look at where the temp control switch is in the fridge. There should be some vents in this area. The fan is located behind that panel. Once you remove the panel take the model number and serial number to the parts house and they should be able to get your fan part. If by chance the fan is rotating then it is possible your defroster is out. You will be able to tell if the defroster is out there will be a large chunk of ice in the area of the fan

Freezer fine /After power went out twice fridge not cold enough

In back of the refrigerator is a removable panel behind which is the compressor. Listen for a hum and a click. If you hear those sounds the compressor may have failed. Behind that same panel is a condenser where heat is removed from the refrigerating system. Make sure it is clean and check that the fan operates when the compressor runs.
