Run a load of whites and make it fairly strong with bleach. Bleach is essentially nothing more than chlorine (sodium hypochloride). It kills bacteria very efficiently and will kill the bacteria causing the smell in your washer. I do this at least once per month to keep the system cleaned out and I don't have a smell even if my wife forgets to take the load out for a long time. Beware, however, that if you have a septic system, the bleach may kill off the good bacteria that digest the nasty stuff in your septic tank and drain field. Thus, it's always a good idea to add septic system bacteria once a month. You simply flush it down the toilet. You don't need to worry about this if you are on a public sewer hookup.
