I have this same refrigerator, also purchased in 2006. Same exact problem. Fridge freezes, starting actually in the water line, you will notice water on door does not work, then top two shelves start to freeze. Lasts for a few days, then prob does not happen again for 6 months almost to the day. I've had this problem for almost 3 years!!! My service tech said to buy another, glitch in this system he can't figure out. Replaced damper x2, control board, and thermostat x2. Not sure what else to do. I hate the thought of more food lost to spoilage!

Hi bbritt67,
This problem is often caused by a defective fan motor. To check on this here's how: If you open the freezer door, do you hear a fan running inside the freezer? It will be very noticeable when you open the door if the fan is running (not subtle). If you don't that means your evaporator fan motor isn't running. The fan inside the freezer is supposed to run and when it's running it's circulates the air throughout the freezer and the refrigerator. Without the fan running, the refrigerator won't cool at all since it only cools down by stealing cold air from the freezer. This is the link to the fan motor inside the freezer behind the back panel that you will need to replace to fix the problem.
Hope this helps.
Thank you for using FixYa.

Hello,
They most likely problem is going the damper asm. that opens/closes to let air flow into the refrig.when is calls for cooling then closes when its cold enough. That damper is stuck open andletting in too much cold air. To repair that the damper assambly should be replaced ,the part # for it is 61005991 It fits in the upper left corner of the fresh food section, trying to close it some by hand now will restrict some air flow and perhaps everything wont freeze, until the damper can be replaced. It can be purchased at your local appliance parts store on online at
searspartsdirect.com
repairclinic.com
apwagner.com
apdepot.com
midwestapplianceparts.com
Both should be set around 5 to 6 at the most if the fridge is new.End no more then that.
