VW Golf engine revving when idle

I have a 53 reg VW Golf. I have noticed over the past few days that when the engine is running idle at traffic lights etc the rev counter is moving erratically as if i am revving the accelerator. Any ideas what this could be?

If its fuel injection,it could be the throttle body needs cleaning or replacing and basic settings need to be done with a suitable diagnostic machine

What would cause car not to rev. up when press on the gas

Most newer model cars have a computer program that will not allow a car to be revved up past a set rpm while in park or neutral to protect the engine from damage. If it runs fine during normal driving operations then it is best to leave it alone.

2002 vw 5 speed Golf intermittently running hot for 2 months

the computer is reset when the battery is disconnected, it takes a few days to relearn your driving habits for idle strategy only, it would have not affect on the cooling system of any kind. check and verify the engine cooling fan is running, if u have AC turn it on, this will cool the engine down and should engage the fan. Make sure that no connectors near the battery were left unplugged or accidentally unplugged.
