On VLC media player on top so screen under audio the mute button has a x through the speaker symbol and I can't turn it off. Am trying to play a DVD on computer

heres a suggestion go back to xp service pack 2. service pack is very easy to use and more compatibility than sp3. right now my 10 pc's are all xp sp2 and they have no problems about the sound.hope that helps

You should also check your DVD playback software and make sure that you have it set for desktop/laptop speakers and NOT for something like 5.1 or 7.1 surround etc.

ok change ur setting at contorl panel ,here it is step by step click start > settings>control panel > and click sound and audio devices and change or ur settings as u like and check whether all the sound devices are working properly or not if not install all sound devies ok rate me please

First you have check no yor BIOS that your internal sound card is enabled or disabled and then check on your device whether it's being detected

If your system detects it then you need drivers for the sound card

If this is a desktop make sure you plug the speakers into the correct port and that the speakers are turned on and the volume is up. Also check the Audio and Sound Properties (Volume Control) to make sure the volume is turned up and not on mute.

Are the speakers plugged into the light green port on the back of the desktop? Are the speakers turned on?

Check the Audio Sound properties to make sure the volume is turned up and not muted. Click Start/Control Panel and look for Audio or Sound.

You can Right Click on the megaphone at the bottom right near the time to open and check the audio properties.

Check the Audio Properties in the Device Manager to make sure all the drivers are installed and working properly. Click Start/Control Panel then look for System or System and Performance. Open the Device Manager.

Try the VLC Player. it comes with drivers and codec. I have seen it solve Audio Problems when Media Player could not function.

did u intalled KLC codec pack or any other codec pack, if it is try to reinstall the codec pack and restart the pc and try.
