Keyboard keys not make contact

I have a keyboard that fails to make contact with some of the keys. Do I have to replace it or is there a way to take this keyboard out to clean or replace?

Re: Keyboard keys not make contact

If you are smart enough to figure out how to pull out the keybord you can try gently rubbing the contacts to clean them and re-seating them, but probably are better off getting a replacement keyboard for the laptop- as they go for 20 to 40 on ebay for most models.

Pc spacebar`

Not being funny, but is the keyboard clean. Have you tried using a vacuum cleaning to try to clean the keyboard? You could also try using a compressed air can to clean the keyboard. If this fails, then it may be time for a new keyboard to be fitted. Another problem that happens is that the contacts under the keys wear and then they don't make full contact. Hope this will help. Good luck. Mind you this day an age it may be cheaper to buy a replacement laptop than to get the keyboard replaced.

Left shift key not working

Hi Marcy,

Check that the key depresses all the way (same amount as other keys next to it). If so, then the most likely problem is that the keyboard has failed. You can have the keyboard replaced fairly easily.

Keyboard for the Dell Vostro 1520 costs $20 or less depending on where you buy. You can view YouTube videos on how to replace the keyboard or have someone professionally replace it for you.

when keys fail on a Laptop Keyboard, it's not the keys themselves but the contacts on the keyboard.

I need open the Lap for clean the keyboard

You can lift the affected keys off the keyboard to get at the key contacts. Clean with solvent spray cleaner under the rubber contacts.
The keys can be replaced by positioning over the plactic hinges and pressed home until it clicks into place.
If this doesn't work you will need to replace the keyboard.
Keyboard replacements are available on the Internet, I replaced one from Yall Store for approx. $60

Shift key has to be pressed firmly to work.

If there were more that one key that has failed it would indicate that you have a keyboard controller chip that has failed or that the connector from the keyboard to the motherboard is not making proper contact. You may get that key to work by pressing that key very firmly.

You may be able to fix the faulty key by removing that key and spraying the faulty key contact with electronic spray cleaner whilst pressing the key pad several times. It may not work because it may be sealed and the cleaning fluid may not be able to penetrate the key contacts.

Then the only thing to do is to buy and fit a new keyboard from the manufacrurer.,

Laptop keyboard not working

Random keys or a row of keys not working indicates that the keyboard is failing and needs replacing. Before replacing, you might try taking the keyboard off and cleaning the connection. A little dirt or corrosion built up might cause this, but most likely the keyboard has malfunctioned.

Keyboard Circuit Faulty?

Since all of the failing keys are on the right hand side, I'd try a short (maybe 15 minutes) soak in warm soapy water of the right hand 1/2 of the keyboard. While it is soaking, every few minutes try depressing the failing keys several time each. Follow this with a good rinse with warm water and a good drying. A hair drier will help to speed up the process. If that doesn't work, you'll probably need to find a replacement keyboard.
