Question about Computers & Internet

No power Western Digital Elements WD5000E035 500GB drive

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} The drive has no power.
The power adapter appears to work from the socket: the light on the adapter turns green, until I plug it in to the drive, at which point it goes dark.
I’ve tried disconnecting everything, rebooting the machine, and reconnecting – no result.

My questions:
Is the problem likely to be with the adapter, or within the drive itself?
If the former, where do I buy a new one?
If the latter, how do I get it repaired in order to at least access the data and transfer it across to a new drive?

Check the label affixed on the unit. It should indicate the power requirements. If not, go to the Western Digital website and locate the specifications for this particular model.

Chances are you have a faulty power supply. Contact Western Digital at their website for an RMA. The website is

My WD Elements 640GB Wont turn on.

I had the same problem. I fixed this by leaving the power supply connected with the wall socket for about 15 minutes, without connecting it to the external hdd. After that I connected the power supply with the external hdd and it worked perfectly. I hope this helps for you too!

Western Digital Elements HD doing a clicking noise and no access

It might be the power adapter. I had one of these and two Maxtor external drives that just clicked that way and it turned out their adapters were bad. You can check with another adapter if you can borrow one from another drive, or use a replacement from Radio Shack. Make sure you get the same voltage and current rating marked on the original.

If the adapter isn't at fault, the small circuit board in the enclosure may be the trouble. You can remove the drive from the case and connect it to directly to a computer power supply to see if spins up properly.

If the drive still doesn't spin, it's bad. This is a common way for a drive to fail. Unfortunately, this leaves you with a drive that you can't read. Hopefully you've backed your important data up on CD or DVD.

My Elements 500 ext hard drive no longer appears on desktop

I did this on my PC. Took it to the shop (Harvey Norman). The techie reckons I got a spike across the terminals because I did not properly disconnect. He reformatted the drive for me. Unfortunately i lost everything on it (unrecoverable anyway he said). Worked fine till I got a problem with the transformer. Still working on that one. Know where to get a new transformer/power supply?

My drive won't start up

Don't use a power strip or surge protector.... try to connect the power supply adapter directly to a wall socket. Always safely remove hardware after use
