Question about Western Digital 500GB ELEMENTS 500 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive

2 Answers

No power Western Digital Elements WD5000E035 500GB drive The drive has no power. The power adapter appears to work from the socket: the light on the adapter turns green, until I plug it in to the drive, at which point it goes dark. I?ve tried disconnecting everything, rebooting the machine, and reconnecting ? no result. My questions: Is the problem likely to be with the adapter, or within the drive itself? If the former, where do I buy a new one? If the latter, how do I get it repaired in order to at least access the data and transfer it across to a new drive?

    The drive: http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products....

    Possible solutions:
    From the Western Digital FAQ:
Why is my external hard drive having a power issue, or is not being recognized in Windows or My Computer? http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/...

Again from the FAQ (hoping it won't be necessary):
How can I move or copy files from one hard drive to another in Windows? http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/...

Same thing happened to me with my WD Elements. Took it to Geek Squad and turns out that I need a new hard drive casing.

Elements by WD, AC Adapter Failed

There are replacement models for this 5V/1.5A power supply that the AD6008 uses.

One of them is made by a company called "Asian Power Devices" [APD] and their model number for the replacement for this particular unit is: DA-30C01.

I've seen them for sale on www.amazon.com for around $25.00.

AC Adapter blinks once, but no power getting to hard drive

These drives are known for lunching the power supply within the unit itself. Depending on you PC configuration, you may wish to do the same as I did when mine went. The drive itself is a standard 7200 sata drive. If your motherboard has sata capability, and/or a spare sata connection, you can slave the drive into your pc, and end of problem.

Western Digital Elements HD doing a clicking noise and no access

It might be the power adapter. I had one of these and two Maxtor external drives that just clicked that way and it turned out their adapters were bad. You can check with another adapter if you can borrow one from another drive, or use a replacement from Radio Shack. Make sure you get the same voltage and current rating marked on the original.

If the adapter isn't at fault, the small circuit board in the enclosure may be the trouble. You can remove the drive from the case and connect it to directly to a computer power supply to see if spins up properly.

If the drive still doesn't spin, it's bad. This is a common way for a drive to fail. Unfortunately, this leaves you with a drive that you can't read. Hopefully you've backed your important data up on CD or DVD.

My drive won't start up

Don't use a power strip or surge protector.... try to connect the power supply adapter directly to a wall socket. Always safely remove hardware after use
