Question about Sport & Outdoor - Others

Should twin outboard motors be installed evenly or should one be slightly higher than the other? I recently bought a 26 foot Sea Hawk with twin Honda 150s. I noticed that one motor seems to be about an inch higher than the other. Is this appropriate?

Twin outboards should be mounted at the same level. One should be standard rotation and one should be counterrotation. The propellers should be the same pitch and size but opposite rotation.

Just check which hole on the motor mount that the top mounting bolt goes through. Should be the same one on both motors.

You may want to call the manufacture of the boat and see it there was something unique about that boat that required mounting them that way. You will need the serial number from the hull of your boat when you call.

May I use higher octane unleaded fuel in this engine? (Say, 97 or 98 octane).

Hi Paul

Certainly you can. We use mid-grade or supreme in our Honda 15 outboard all the time. If the higher octane isn't needed, no harm done. After all, with a boat motor, it's working hard all the time and the higher octane certainly can't hurt.

Hope this helps.

Should have bought a 225/250 hp. Not quite enough power for my 23 foot center console. Is there a "chip" or something to get some more HP out of this motor?

Probably but most likely will shorten engine life. Change of prop to one that will cope with higher RPM if there is such a thing, may allow higher engine revs, therefore, more horsepower. If it's an inboard engine. If outboard talk to your dealer.

How do i replace the water pump in a 2005 150 hp evinrude outboard motor

Take the cowling off. Also drop the foot. There wil be a stainless linkage rod that runs the length of the motor that you will have undo to drop the foot. The water impeller will be inside a stainless casing that you will have to disassemble.

We bought the Clymer Honda outboard shop manual (B757) which covers Honda 2-130 HP from 1979 to 1999.
It was $20 and worth every penny.

Hope this is helpful.

It seems like a lot of slop in engine to drive train

It is very typical (and intensely annoying) that when you transition from accelerating — however slightly — to decelerating — however slightly — there is a big bounce as if there is enormous slop in the drive train.

Every motorcyle I have ever had (Kawasaki 175 2-stroke, Honda CB350 twin, Yamaha 650 twin, Yamaha 750 special and Suzuki GS 850), and every motorcycle I have ever driven (Honda CB 50, Yamaha Mini-Enduro 60, Honda Hawk 400, Kawasaki 750 LTD, Yamaha Virago 650, Yamaha Virago 750) has had this “feature.”

30 horse power '88 Mariner motor won't stay started

If you have portable tanks, some have screens under the coupler assembly. They could be dirty. If you have more than one tank, you could switch out on the water. Make sure the bubble pump is hard and full of gas. It is not uncommon for some outboards to need choking to start even when warm. This is an updraft carburetor characteristic.
