Drain Valve on bottom of water heater drips when Water IN turned

I was required to do SHOCK chlorination on my well (well water) for 3 straight days. High Chlorinated water is not good for rubber parts. Drain Valve began to leak when full pressure was applied to system and water tank was full.

Drain Valve below is metal but has no handle just slot for a screw driver to turn it. Tightened it as best I as could but leak wouldn't stop. None of this is in the GE SmartWater Manual it is Saturday Night and all the plumbers are CLOSED.
Had to cut off water to the house and water shut switch to water heater ; also had to drain water tank.

If the hot water heater is gas be sure it's turned off same if it's electric so you don't burn out theelements in the tank, I would advise you to buy some plumbers putty and pull the drain scre out and put putty in it then reinstall the screw. all the ones I looked at I could not tell by looking to see where the drain was and if it has like a hose bib on it or not. also pull the screw all theway out and see if you got some sand in the valve and if so use some compressed air in a can to blow the stuff out of the seating area of the screw. Hope this is helpful would be nice to have a picture of the drain.

I have a GE Profile Water Heater Model #SE40M12AA01.

I recommend safety changes to prevent ruptured water heater and assorted leaks.
135 degree hot water.
Maybe replace TP valve if it is dripping.
Drip pan under water heater with 3/4" drain line to outside.
Expansion tank on incoming cold water line to absorb pressure build-up, and prolong life of tank and plumbing.

Here's why:

1) Yes you can have scalding hot water.

2) I recommend 135 degrees since that will burn the evil right out of ya. And generally kill clothes washing bacteria.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-adjust-water-heater-temperature.html

3) 150 is dangerous and can seriously burn skin in 1.5 seconds. Not safe around children and elderly.

4) Temperature settings on electric water heater are approximate, since thermostats are calibrated approximately, and read temperature through tank wall.

5) Also if you want to increase amount of hot water for high-consumption household, then setting tank temperature upward is one solution since more cold water is mixed with hot, so amount of hot inside tank goes further.

6) High temperature can cause TP valve to release water.
TP valve is pressure-temperature safety valve. Do NOT cap off.
Rating should be 125 psi and 180 degrees ... but all things water heater are approximate, and TP valves need replacement now and then.
It is not recommended by water heater manufactures to use 150 psi TP valve when water heater came with 125 psi. Rating shows in small print on end of TP. New TP valves sold at local hardware. Let tank cool before installing new one.

7) Higher temperature and high pressure can rupture tank.
Pressure over 80 psi shortens life of water heaters and plumbing fixtures. Put BTG100 pressure gauge on water heater drain valve to check pressure.

8) You need a drip pan with 3/4" drain line to outdoors, or to drain vent line, to prevent flood caused by ruptured water heater.
Turn water heater off when going on vacation.
Inspect water heater each 6 months.
Drip pan available at local home center or hardware:
http://waterheatertimer.org/9-ways-to-save-with-water-heater.html#drip

9) Heated water expands and puts pressure on tank and pipes.
Water does not compress... so when water gets hotter it expands against tank wall and against pipes.
Especially in closed system (check valve present) when system is without expansion tank.
Expansion tank is installed on incoming cold water line.

Problem keeping my Rheem hot water heater light

What brand, model, and approximately how old is water heater?
This is important because water heater designs are changing quickly.
Did you remove door over combustion chamber to access thermocouple?
Newer Rheem water heaters have air intake under combustion chamber that has to be blown out using compressed air.
If this is different brand, then use mirror under water heater to see air intake.
Set water heater on bricks to avoid high water. Make sure drain line out of drip pan is 3/4" and terminates in good drainage location.

Put brass garden hose cap over drain valve.

WATER KEEP RUNNING OUT OF THE RELEASE VALE

you can go to get another relief valve because if its dripping its probably bad. if you have a clark supply center nearby, you can get one there! or another plumbing place or water heater supply. you may have to drain out some water to bring the level below the valve. Shut off the power to water heater. If electric, turn gas to pilot setting, if a gas water heater. Cut off water supply to water heater as well. It is not necessary to drain the entire tank. Open a hot water faucet, drain water from tank, drain for approximately three to five minutes. Prepare the new relief valve with Teflon tape. Unscrew the relief valve counter-clockwise with a wrench to remove.
Turn the water supply back on to water heater. Make sure water is running from the open faucet before turning the power back on. good-day!

I just noticed that my hot water heater that is 6 years old is dripping very slowly from the bottom faucet, how can i stop this leak. thank you.

If you mean the drain valve, then buy garden hose cap at home center.
Cap will have rubber washer that seals tank.
If drain valve is plastic, the cap may not thread on without sanding down end of plastic drain valve.
Otherwise replace drain valve, which is simple if drain valve is brass, but can be difficult if drain valve is plastic.
Turn off power to water heater: Electric: turn off circuit breaker. Gas: turn knob to pilot.
Turn off water, open bathtub spigot on Hot side, drain water heater, remove drain valve with wrench.
If plastic drain valve breaks while being removed, then 'gently' break out broken part using hammer and big screwdriver.
Buy new drain valve at box store in water heater department.
Put teflon tape on new drain valve threads.

When you say drain valve, do you mean TP valve?
Two different things: -drain valve and -TP valve

-Drain valve is located near bottom of tank and has hose thread on end.
-TP valve is brass and is located on side of tank tank near top on , and has a pipe that runs down within 6" of floor, or pipe goes into a drain pipe. DO NOT CAP OFF TP VALVE because this is safety outlet that prevents extremely hot water from rupturing tank.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Leaking-water-heater.html

1) If drain valve located near bottom of tank is leaking, it can be capped with a garden hose cap from hardware store-home center. Thread cap on end of drain valve.

2) If TP valve is leaking.
a)Turn down thermostats on water heater
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-adjust-water-heater-temperature.html
b)Replace TP valve
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-TP-valve.html
c) Install expansion tank on incoming cold water line
Buy expansion tank at hardware-home center-plumbing supply and tee straight out from cold water line and attach expansion tank. About the size of small football.

Water heater should be set in a drip pan.
Otherwise, put 1 gallon bucket under TP release pipe to catch water.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-at-bottom-of-water-heater.html#drip-pan

When you say relief valve, I assum you are talking about brass valve located on top of tank or near top of tank. This is TP valve and a pipe connects to this valve and runs down to within 6" of bottom of tank. TP valve has a small lever on it.
If you are talking about tank drain valve located at bottom of tank, then add a comment.
Following information is for TP valve.

Dripping TP valve can be caused by 3 different thing:

1) Obstruction inside TP valve. Open TP valve for a moment to flush away particles and slowly lower lever back down. See if water stops dripping, if not, then replace TP valve

2) Defective TP valve: replace TP valve. Turn off electricity to water heater. Let heater cool for several hours so you do not get scalded. Close shut off valve located above tank on cold side. Open tub spout to relieve pressure, open tank drain or open TP valve and empty water below TP valve level. If TP is located on top of tank, not much water has to be drained. Tank is under press when hot, so be careful. Put teflon tape on new valve and install with big pipe wrench by turning clockwise until TP valve is very tight.

3) Overheating tank. TP valve is temperature-pressure valve. If tank water is over 150 degrees, the TP valve starts drizzling hot water to relieve tank pressure.
Lower tank pressure two different ways:
a) turn down thermostat
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-adjust-water-heater-temperature.html
b) install expansion tank on incoming cold water line

We have a fast drip coming from the drain, what does that mean?

The pressure relief valve is going bad causing water to run out of drain line. They are easy to replace and they are a standard 3/4' threads. Turn power off and drain water down till no water comes out of drain if you lift the lever on the relief valve.
Lowes or Home Depot will carry a replacement for this heater. The T & P valve is a safety feature that will open if the pressue get's to high due to high heat in heater. With this you would get a blast of hot water running out.
T & P valve start to go bad they start dripping and evenually can not hold water back. This is a early sign for you to replace before it goes to running out.

Pop off valve dripping Rheem 50 gal electric valve at bottom

If you are reffering to the drain valve at the bottom of the hot water tank. It may be leaking due to the O ring being cracked or worn out. You can either drain the tank and replace the valve or you can buy a hosebib brass cap and thread it on the existing valve. There is no cause for alarm when doing this as this valve is just to drain the tank when replacing your hot water heater

Flooded bathroom from top of unit

The T&P valve (temperature and pressure) relief valve is suppose to have a 3/4 in drain line threaded into it .This line should have ran to a trapped drain or possibly to the outside of the house. A water heater cannot over fill. To drain your water heater run a garden hose to the outside or to the lowest drain you have nearby. If its still wet be carfull not to get shocked,Attach the garden hose to the drain valve located towards the bottom of the water heater. turn the valve on. If water dosnt come out of the other end of the hose, youll have to see if you can run a peice of wire through the valve into the water heater to get it to drain. This can somtimes be a real problem . I usually leave the water on when i first connect the hose to the drain valve. This allows the water pressure to flush the sedament out of the bottom of the water heater.

Dripping Drain valve on rheem water heater

If your water heater is 10 years old or more, it's much better to replace the entire thing before you start having additional problems with it. You MAY be able to drain your water heater and replace the valve with something more reliable, but, as I've said... if your water heater is old, this is just the 1st thing to go wrong. More will follow.
