Question about Kenmore Refrigerators

Bottom freezer is cold; top refrigerator isn't and its fan either isn't working or is moving hardly any air.

New to FixYa, should have posted this: Kenmore serial no 59666132700.

The fan in the bottom freezer is fine and its very cold. The fan to cool the compressor coils is fine. I don't know if there is a separate fan for the top refrigerator. This is where the problem seems to be. If there is a separate fan, either it isn't working or something is blocking the airflow. The interior fans are presently always engaged, but the compressor starts and stops regularly. If there is a fan, is it possible the drain is blocked, and should I check that, and if so, how?

Thanks, Ginko. This is helpful and I'll be accepting the solution.

If I set the temp control at off, do I need to unplug for this complete defrost?

Where is the air duct that I should check--how to access it?

I note that there is a plastic grill at the top of the refrigerator that covers the place where the cold air should be coming out, but isn't. Is it possible to remove it and look in there? I've tried to manipulate it away from where it's attached, but haven't succeeded and don't want to break it.

This should be my last enquiry on this matter.

The fan grill just pops in and out on most models, but the problem is either the fridge thermostat or the fan.

If the fan is not moving at all, then the fan motor must be checked. The fan assembly can be tested by energizing the motor.

If the fan is starting only sometimes, then the problem is not the fan motor, check thermostat , control board and temp sensors, depending on the model.

If the fan you are talking about is the one from the defrost system, located behind freezer firewall, then check the freezer defrost thermostat.

There is no separate fan for the top refrigerator, however, the fridge has a separate fridge temperature control. Before replacing the fridge control the fridge must be tested allowing complete defrost, and leaving the unit unplugged from power for some times.
On this fridge, only on series 13 models, there is also a dampness control that can stop cooling, the dampness control can also cause the problem.
Check also that the air duct is not obstructed.
the control board is difficult to test, therefore there is always a minimal risk that problem is not fixed when replacing the part.

Here sears parts page for this model, the website is temporarily not working: KENMORE | Model #59666132700

Here fridge control board: Control board and Damper, control (w/harness) (series 13)

this fan needs to run when the compressor runs, check fan blade for being jammed by ice if you have this much ice on back wall as ice will stall motor,if no fan there will be no cool air to refrige compartment also the defrost drain tray will fill with water then freeze over which in turn floods the freezer floor and refrige compartments cause it cannot drain to the pan in the bottom

open the freezer door,do you hear the fan blowing around?it sounds like the evap fan motor isn't running and that's why it's cold on the bottom and not the top,you have to repair this fast or you'll loose your food in the fridge, the fan is what blows the cold air from the freezer to the fridge section.

The freezer side does not freeze on the top shelf. The refrigerator freezes everything in the bottom but reads 47 degrees and doesn't cool the top shelves. The fan under the fridge runs fine.

Behind the back wall of the freezer about halfway down, probably behind the light bulb (if there is one there) there is a fan. My guess is that the fan isn't working, or is slow. To test, open the freezer door, then hold the door switch closed and listen for the fan.

This fan should be blowing air up the back of the freezer, and send some of the cold air through a vent at the top of the freezer into the fridge. The air then descends through the fridge and reenters the freezer through a vent at the bottom. If the fan is broken, or if the upper vent is somehow blocked or broken, the cold air will enter (rather than exit) the fridge side at the bottom vent. Because cold air tends to descend and warm air rises, the cold air will freeze the stuff at the bottom of the fridge, and the thermostat (at the top of the fridge) will say it is warm.

Top of freezer is fine but the bottom isn't as

Sounds like your evaporator fan is not doing its job. The purpose of this fan is to move cold air from the evaporator coil (behind the lining of the unit) to the rest of the freezer and to the refrigerator.

The fan should be behind an access plate at the top of the freezer compartment. If it is running, you should be able to hear it. If you don't hear it, open the access plate and look at it. If the fan is not turning, you will need to replace the fan motor.

After cleaning coils my refrigerator is still blowing warm air yet the freezer is cold what can I do myself to make the refrigerator cold?

There is a small fan which moves the cold air from the freezer to the refrigerator part. Make sure that this fan is working. If it is not turning, the cold air will not reach the refrigerator.

These fans are easily replaceable; however, you probably will have to remove the interior panels from the refrigerator to gain access.

Refrigerator Not Cold

You are not moving air between the freezer and refrigerator sections. This may be due to a defective fan motor or a frozen evaporator coil.

Freezer is cold but bottom of refrigerator is not

Replace the fan - it's called the evaporator fan. It circulates cold air evenly in the freezer and blows cold air into the refrigerator section. Its failure would cause the symptoms you describe. Good luck with the repair.

GE TFX 22CR Freezer works but not Refrigerator.

If the evaporator fan isn`t working, the frig will not circulate the cold air needed from the freezer to the fresh food compartment. You will need to remove the panel and check for ice around the fan. Make sure it can turn free. If it isn`t blocked and you can turn it freely and there is voltage going to it, the fan motor has gone bad and needs to be replaced if there.

Sani, see if the evaporator fan is running. That would be the fan in the freezer compartment. It moves the cold air to the bottom. If that is ok, then you may have a defrost problem. Is the freezer panel in back all frosted over? If so, it's probabley a defrost issue. Check these things first and post back...Catriver.
