I have the same problem with my Whirlpool top freezer fridge, Model ET1FHTXMQ04 which was purchased only 15 months ago. I entered the kitchen from the basement one night and smelled a burning plastic odor. Thought maybe there was an electrical problem in the house but sniffed my way toward the fridge. Still unsure, I left it because it seemed fine. Next day it did not seem as cold although the freezer seems normal. A couple of days later, milk went bad so now I know somethings up with the fridge. Sounds like a relay in my case too? Seems strange since its fairly new!

How long had it been plugged in when you started to smell the burn. What kind of burn do you smell, is it an electrical burning smell or a smoldering dust burning smell.

It sounds like your compressor start relay may be the cause of your smell. It will be located on the side of the compressor. It will either be an assembly that plugs on the side or it will be under a black plastic cover on the side of the compressor. You could use a straw to sniff with. If it is a white assembly pull it off the compressor (it pulls strait away from the compressor to the left) If you shake it and it rattles it is bad. If it is under a black cover it will be a small part that also will pull off the compressor. Again if it rattles it is bad.

Get a new one and follow the directions that come with it and you have save $$$$$. Good for you!

I am betting that is what is smelling but if not please give any and as much other info you can. I will be happy to help.

Thanks for all your help. My relay was bad and I was able to get one delivered to my house for $34. That is way less than a new fridge. Your directions were idiot proof and I was able to find the relay and pull it off within a minute. Thank you so much.

I have a burning smell coming from inside my kitchenaid superba side by side fridge. It smells like a burning plastic. The fridge still turns on and keeps things cool, but it started to kick out that...

Remove the power plug and move your fridge forward. Now look at the rear bottom side of the fridge to see if there are any parts that heats up. You can trace this to the smell emitting from the heated part and confirm. It can be the motor, contactor or the defrost timer.

Fridge gave off a burning smell and quit cooling on fridge and freezer both is it the motor?

it is possible, but first you must check the relay, the capacitor, the overlay protection and the wire's.

I just moved my dads fridge to my house and after about 7 hours I smelled a burnt plastic smell. I smell it on and off.The fridge is still cooling. When i moved it I layed it down.

When a fridge is layed down the oil in the compressor will flow into the refridgerant lines and will have to be stood upright until the oil can return the the comrpessor. It may be too late for yours but I would try cutting it off for a day before trying it again. This may not be the cause of the smell so keep a nose on that and try to locate exactly where it's coming from.

The middle of the refrigerator between the (2) side by side doors is burning hot. I vacuumed the coils underneath and that didn't help.

Behind the fridge , the motor which cools the compressor , is not turning . Either something is blocking the fan blade , or the motor is bad .

Acrid smoke emanating from the refrigerator

Check and see if the smell is coming from the bottom back of the frig by the compressor, this models start device on the compressor has been known too do that.

Burning Rubber smell coming from fridge

try taking the bottom panel off and vacuming all the dust on the coils. The dust may be heating up and burning. The coils are usually at the bottom of the fridge. Check to see if the fan is running also.

Smells like burned

Since power outages aren't always polite and absolute, your fridge may have been subjected to low line voltages for an extended time and gee, Whirlpool still hasn't figured out how to protect their product from this kind of damage. We lost one the same way years ago in CA; we came home after being gone for hours, smelled the fridge, checked the line voltage which was wandering around 25 volts +- ~2 volts. Enough to burn the compressor windings but not enough to start it.
In that case, the electric company paid for the compressor replacement on our two-year-old Whirlpool. If you can dig up anyone who was noting the line voltage, maybe you can file a claim with your utility.

Water Dispensing System

Check that the dispenser is not locked. Some models have a lock feature that deactivates the dispenser levers and control buttons. The lock button is on the dispenser front cover. This feature controls unintentional dispensing during cleaning. Press the "Unlock" or "Locked" button to reactivate the dispenser levers and allow dispenser function. You may need to hold the button for 2 to 3 seconds.
