Snapper won't go forward but will back

I don't know whether to look at the clutch or a key in the wheel/axle

You're in luck, if your Snapper is of the type with a record playersnapper won't go forward but will back - 2.gif drive. Let me explain myself. Look under the motor. You should see that the shaft connects to a disc that has a rubber coated drive disc (or tire) under it. Works like this: when you are in the forward speeds, the tire is on one side of the disc. When in reverse, the tire moves to the other side. This means to me that it is neither your clutch or axle. Snapper dealers sell a tool that allows you to adjust the friction of the record (disc) against the drive wheel (tire). You loosen two allen screws on the disc where it mounts to the motor shaft, and the special tool screws into the center of the disc. With the tool installed, you screw down the jack screw to tighten the disc against the drive wheel. You then tighten the allen screws back up and you're done. Sounds too easy, 'eh? There are other variables you'll need to consider, mostly the condition of your drive wheel. The rubber on it will wear over time, so look at it carefully. If it is cracked or damaged, it should be replaced. It's easy to do. What about costs? Good question.... It's been a while, but best I remember, the speciality tool is ~$20. You'll need a long allen wrench to fit (~$2), and maybe the drive tire (~$15). The best news is that the speciality tool lasts virtually forever, and you'll use it again if you keep your Snapper

when you installed the rear wheel did you install the square key back on the axle?

I removed, re-inflated and reinstalled back right tire on my Poulan 42", 18 hpr riding mower, now it won't engage in gears and move forward or backward. I've compared the reinstallion with...


there is a slot on the axle for a square key to fit in.
when you took off the wheel it might have fallin off.
look around for a little square piece of metal.
like a little bar.
put it in the slot and put wheel back on.

Hear a clicking noise when backing up and forward


if you hear that clicking noise whether going forward or backward,,it's most likely a bad cv joint on your axle going bad,,or bad. you'll need to replace the axle it's coming from. just have someone listen to the noise while you're going forward or backwards while turning the wheel in motion to determine which axle is bad! hope this helps!!

do you have the complete model number from the data tag on the mower frame? there are two typical systems for these machines, both require the belt to be tight and not slipping at the crank shaft, and the pulley on the trans-axle to not be slipping on its shaft, the older style trans axle uses a belt tensioner system to tighten the belt and turn the pulley, i.e. if the pulley turns then the axle should too. this can be checked by hand with the axle and belt removed. the second system is a clutch style axle that has a constantly tight belt and uses a small cable controlled lever on the transmission housing to engage a drive clutch inside the transaxle, if moving the lever forward doesn't cause the axle to turn as the pulley and shaft are turning the clutch mechanism is usually toast. with both of these systems one should also note whether the axle is turning inside the wheels when they are on the ground, the over running clutch sprags inside the drive gears could be stuck causing the wheels to turn without resistance applied, but stall when in contact with the ground.

while inspecting the trans axle note any wobble or free play in the axles or input shaft, this will indicate a worn case or bearing, resulting in a slipping gear in the trans axle.

My snapper mower only has two forward gears and no reverse. the clutch is worn. Could replacing the clutch fix the problem or is there something else going on with the transmission?


Typically if your clutch is worn, you would experience some slippage in all gears. If your forward gears work, but reverse does not, you should be looking at a potentially more serious problem.

Remove the center dust caps from the rear axles, start the tractor up and put it in gear and observe the axles, if one of them is spinning freely inside the wheel, you have lost the 1/4" square key that pins the wheel to the axle. Replace the key and you can go back to mowing. This often happens when a flat has been repaired and the wheel pushes the key out the back as you slide it back on the axle. Sometimes it will just barely catch at the edge of the wheel and work for a while then fall out and you not even know it
