Question about Kenmore 14.8 cu. ft. / 419 liter Chest Freezer 13541

1 Answer

Kenmore chest freezer.

Compressor is short cycling on its thermal overload. About every 5min. it runs about 8seconds then cuts out. Its full load amp rating is 1.5 amps and its drawing 12 amps. Locked rotor is 13amps. Is it possible for it to draw that many amps if it is low on refrigerant to the point it's not cooling the compressor. Or is it most likely the compressor has seized.

Most likely a bad compressor. You could try a new relay on it first.

The compressor probably shut off on thermal overload. This protects the compressor from burning up. What has happened is that a capacitor or evaporator has gone bad or it could be low on freon. Have someone take a look at it. However, if it is older than 8-10 years old, consider replacing it. This could be the beginning of the end.

Start up current draw

Lock motor Amps ( LMA ) is the current draw when the compressor starts. This draw of current is less then 1sec.The amp amount shoud be on the compressor Name Plate. This amp draw is also the amps used when the compressor goes bad and locks up then the overload kicks out.

My kenmore 19.7 cu.ft. chest freezer is not running and the compressor is hot

Place a volt meter set for amp draw around one wire of the compressor. If you do not have a constant amp draw replace the start relay on the compressor.
If you do have a constant amp draw the compressor is bad or you have a refrigerant leak.

Red light blinking with audible alarm. Compressor

That is the compressor starting relay trying to start the cooling cycle and the overload protector kicking off. You can try installing a new start device for about $50.00 but you are most likely looking at a compressor replacement which runs about $400.00

Sorry for the bad news

Kenmore Chest Freezer Model number 1987191852 has started to defrost own its own. Compressor starts and shuts down after appx 2 seconds. Has this unit reached the end? is it cost effective to repair?

Good day,
That short cycle you hear, is the compressor trying to start, and can't.
It is possible one of the start components has failed. Under a cover on the side of the compressor are either 3 or 2 components.
The start relay, the protective overload and on some models a start/run capacitor. These components can be removed by pulling them off of the pins of the compressor.
Most appliance parts houses will be glad to test them for you. Replace any that test bad.

If all test O.K. then it is an internal problem with the compressor itself, which would take the services of a trained tech and pretty pricey.

Plug it in, a click is heard but no compressor coming on, doesn't freeze

The click sound that you hear is from the clixon (overload protection) on the compressor. This means that the compressor is tripping on overload.

Avanti chest freezer cf199 will not freeze. A

Sounds like your freezer has lost its charge of refrigerant. That motor sound is the compressor. And the internal thermal overload is tripping it out every minute because refrigerant also cools the compressor motor. Have a licensed repairman find the leak, seal it,and recharge it with R134a refrigerant.

Compressor stops running unplug for awhile then plug back in compressor starts for a day or two

There could be many reasons for running hot, and the "Thermal Overload" is protecting the compressor.
Make sure nothing else is on the circuit used by the freezer.
Lastly, you may have a weak overload.

compressor is running overloaded possible problems bad relay/overload /capacitor dirty or clogged condensers if the unit uses a condenser fan suspect a bad fan. and defective thermostats are notorious for short cycling. id check the coils first and if dirty clean up maybe that can be the major problem.
