Turn off the gas and remove the float bowl. Remove the fuel line. Remove the float pin and float with needle valve. Do not bend the tang that the float needle sits on. Spray carb cleaner into the seat where the needle valve came from to clear out any trash in the valve casing. Spray the float bowl and interior of the carb. Remount the needle and float back in place and put the float bowl back on. Install an in-line fuel filter. The diagram below shows a 1994 carb Yours will be the same or close to it.

The petrol is coming from the carburettor overflow because it is flooding. This is almost certainly because the float in the carb is stuck down, holding the needle valve that lets the petrol into the carb permanently open. Classic result of the bike being left standing and unused for a while (But by no means the only cause. Dirt in the fuel is also another classic cause of this problem). To fix:
1) Remove the carb from the bike, flip it upside down 2) Unscrew the (usually 4) screws holding the float chamber in place.
3) Clean everything out with clean petrol and, if you have access to one, a high pressure air hose.
4) Reassemble and refit.
5) Pray

Hi Some bikes have a vacuum petcock. Whenever the bike started up the petcock opened itself up and whenever it shut down, the petcock shut down too. Check to see if the petcock is set to on. Check to see if the fuel line is hooked up. Check to see if you have a vacuum line, and if it's hooked up. Check to see if the gas tank were possible vacuum locking due to a clogged vent. Alternately haul off the carbs and clean them out. Check to see if the fuel filter is clogged. Also after cleaning the carb and refitting it you will need to add vacuum to that fitting. It is a safety devise to shut the fuel off to the carb. In case the rider forgets a small hand vacuum pump from harbor freight will do the job just fine
